As the grip of "hustle culture" loosens in U.K. workplaces, employees are prioritizing work-life balance more than ever. HRD America writes that according to Owl Labs' State of Hybrid Work 2024 report, 50% of employees now prioritize work-life balance when seeking new employment, up from 41% in 2023. This change is driven by a desire for flexibility, with 73% willing to accept a pay cut for a four-day workweek. The report highlights that 19% of employees are setting stricter boundaries, refusing tasks outside their job descriptions, and 20% avoid work messages after hours. Millennials are leading the charge in "clock blocking," with 57% blocking calendar time to prevent meetings. "Coffee badging," where employees split their workday between the office and remote locations, is also on the rise, with 39% of workers adopting this practice. Despite these trends, 47% would consider leaving their jobs if hybrid work options were removed. HR and comp professionals seeking to engage and retain talent have to pay attention to these growing trends in order to remain competitive in the modern workplace. Today, we remember the incredible life and legacy of Lilly Ledbetter, who passed away at the age of 86 earlier this week. Lilly’s fight for equal pay became a landmark effort in the pursuit of fairness and justice for working women everywhere. Her courage in standing up to workplace inequality not only led to the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act in 2009, but it also inspired countless individuals to advocate for pay equity and justice in their own workplaces. Lilly was a tireless fighter who didn’t back down in the face of adversity. Her story reminds us of the power of persistence and the impact one person can have on the world. Her spirit lives on in the continued fight for gender equality. As we celebrate her life, may we also commit to carrying forward the principles she stood for: ensuring fair pay and equal treatment for all. In Quebec, a shift is underway as employers tighten rules for returning to the office. HRD Canada covered a recent survey by Concilivi which reveals that nearly half of workers have experienced stricter remote work policies, with 22% required to be in the office more often. Despite this, 61% of respondents feel more efficient when remote-working. The hybrid work model remains popular, with 85% of participants appreciating its flexibility and 79% noting its positive impact on work-family balance. However, the challenge of maintaining this balance is growing, with 43% of workers struggling — up from previous years. For working parents and caregivers, the situation is particularly challenging. Over half report difficulties balancing work and caregiving responsibilities, with many fearing career repercussions if they request leave or adjustments. As Corinne Vachon Croteau from Réseau pour un Québec Famille highlights, understanding and supporting the diverse needs of caregivers will be crucial moving forward. Recent research shows that even in our increasingly technologically driven economy, the demand for "human skills" continues to outpace the need for AI skills. HR Dive covered a recent report from Cornerstone OnDemand which shows that while AI and machine learning job postings are on the rise, leadership, communication, and emotional intelligence remain crucial across all regions. The report, based on data from SkyHive by Cornerstone, highlights that generative AI-related job postings surged by 411% after the launch of ChatGPT in early 2023. However, these roles still represent just 0.3% of global job postings and are primarily within software development and IT services. Interestingly, the demand for human skills is significantly higher. In North America, it's 2.4 times greater than for digital skills, and in Europe, it's 2.9 times higher. As Bledi Taska, Head of Analytics at SkyHive, notes, "History suggests that, like past innovations, we may see these trends stabilize." This underscores the importance of upskilling, not just in AI but in essential soft skills like communication and problem-solving. As Mike Bollinger, Global VP of Strategic Initiatives at Cornerstone, emphasizes, retaining these critical skills is vital for organizational success. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/guZzcfXz

In a bold move to address overwork and its societal impacts, the Japanese government is advocating for a four-day workweek. Known for its demanding work culture, Japan is encouraging employers to offer more flexible schedules and paid leave to improve mental health and boost the birth rate. Despite the push, adoption has been slow. HR Brew writes that, for instance, while Panasonic's four-day workweek policy is available to 63,000 employees, only 150 have embraced it. As Hiroshi Ono, a professor of HR at Hitotsubashi University, points out, "It’s going to take time [for the four-day work week] to penetrate…we’re not used to being flexible." This initiative isn't just limited to Japan. In the U.S., some organizations are also experimenting with shorter workweeks. Leaders emphasize the importance of commitment to these policies, as Bjorn Reynolds, CEO of Safeguard Global, advises: "It’s incumbent on the leadership and on HR to make sure that the day off truly remains a day off." A foundational puzzle piece to quality compensation and talent retention for any organization is the work-life balance on offer. We'll be paying close attention to see how these initiatives develop in Japan and around the world and the potential benefit they offer to the workforce.
