Congratulations, Fife High School STEAM Center of Innovation on earning Learning by Design’s Outstanding Project Award. The STEAM Center of Innovation at Fife High School is designed to foster active learning through a focus on hands-on creation and decision-making. The building's exposed systems and structures symbolize the dynamic process of learning, allowing students to make discoveries and bring ideas to life. Architecturally, it sets a vision for the future of Fife High School, presenting a modern face to the community that reflects the current high quality of education while establishing a standard for future expansions. Inside, the classrooms surround double-height spaces filled with diffused natural light, with these "in-between" areas serving as vital connectors for students, maintaining a sense of connection throughout the building. A limited palette of materials—like brick, which conveys a sense of permanence—complements the verticality of the exposed structure. Heavy timbers supporting the simple shed roof reflect the building’s Pacific Northwest roots, while strategically placed windows maximize daylight for all classrooms. Congratulations, Fife School District! McGranahanPBK 📸 arthurrossphoto

We are thrilled to announce that Olympic View K-8 School has been awarded Learning By Design Magazine’s prestigious Grand Prize for projects under 100,000 square feet. This 64,000-square-foot school in Federal Way, Washington, combines a middle and elementary school to create smaller learning communities focused on equity and inclusion. Designed with extensive community input, it includes a “community pavilion” offering resources like a family liaison, counselor, laundry, shower, and food pantry to support the local low-income neighborhood. The school emphasizes whole-child development, social-emotional learning, and STEAM education, with classrooms that promote student self-expression. Cultural role models, murals, and a central pavilion tree with messages in over 45 languages reflect the diverse community. Despite pandemic challenges, early planning kept the project on time and budget.
