National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) has approved Tennessee's initial proposal for BEAD funding and has allocated $813 million to bring high-speed broadband internet to all remaining unserved and underserved locations in the state. With Dominion Energy proposing a new 500/230 kV electric transmission line in Loudon County, Va., county officials & residents will be advocating for an undergrounding alternative at a public hearing on September 5. Emily Leayman reports for Patch.com.   "Lansdowne Conservancy and Loudoun County are advocating for undergrounding of the electric lines between Aspen and Golden substations. The county said in a statement that underground lines 'will preserve the quality of life, viewsheds, and character of the community for the residents, businesses, and visitors to area in which the global data center industry is located.' The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power has selected Stantec for a new five-year effort to upgrade & modernize underground electrical infrastructure across the city. Underground Infrastructure Magazine has the story.   "Under the agreement, Stantec will serve as one of the Owner’s Representatives, providing a range of services, including transmission planning studies, reliability assessments, and economic evaluations. Our skilled team recently conducted a 138KV High-Pressure Fluid-Filled manhole leak repair. The InfraSource crew established a freeze on either end of the manhole, installed two split-sleeve welded repairs, installed an Atlas carbon fiber wrap on the splice sleeve, and replaced all auxiliary 2-inch piping and valves. The crew then applied a vacuum, installed new dielectric fluid, and ensured equalization of pressures before releasing the freezes. Finally, new tape coatings were applied to all newly installed pipes. Due to our team’s expertise and hard work, the project was successfully completed ahead of schedule! New employees were required to learn different knot tying techniques as it relates to what they may see in the field. This exercise showed the new hires step-by-step instructions of how to tie a specific knot, while also showing them how to tie it to fiber. Great week at the training center. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) last week announced $2.2 billion in grants for eight projects across 18 states to help protect the grid against extreme weather events, lower costs for communities, and create additional capacity to meet load growth, largely coming from new manufacturing and data centers.   "The newly selected projects will, according to the DOE, drive nearly $10 billion in total public and private investment. They’ll add nearly 13 gigawatts (GW) of grid capacity – the equivalent of 6.5 Hoover Dams of power – including 4,800 megawatts (MW) of offshore wind.
