About us
Penn State Dickinson Law has created the Antiracist Development Institute (ADI) to dismantle structures that scaffold systemic racial inequality using a systems design approach for the purpose of achieving systemic equity and offering organizations across the country systems design-based approaches to implementing antiracist practices, processes, and policies throughout each of their functions. This interdisciplinary approach to legal education provides law students and lawyers the critical thinking skills that accompany introspection about the role of legal education and the legal profession in creating, interpreting, and counseling of laws that have scaffolded structural racism in American society in contravention of the fundamental value of equality vis-à-vis equal liberty, equal justice, equal citizenship, equal rights, and equal protection of the laws. The ADI builds on the concepts and information presented throughout the “Building an Antiracist Law School, Legal Academy, and Legal Profession” book series to provide law schools and other institutions with a blueprint that will be workshopped through the stages of systems design.

I'm filled with gratitude that I get to share my book, Breaking Bias, with two incredible communities that have been a crucial part of my journey. Both of these virtual events are happening on September 19. At 2:30 pm ET, I'll join my dear friend and Beloved Community member Danielle Conway, Dean at the Antiracist Development Institute at Penn State Dickinson Law (ADI)! I'm so inspired by the work we've been able to do together to make ADI a leader in antiracist legal education and can't wait to share more about my book with their community—and you! At 7 pm ET, I'll join the Reverend Adriene Thorne at The Riverside Church for a conversation about Breaking Bias. THANK YOU to ADI and Riverside Church for holding space for me to share my story—as well as my actionable tools for building a world where exclusion consciousness is replaced by inclusion consciousness. I would be so, so grateful if you would pre-order your copy of Breaking Bias today — and visit my Events page for more details! "It is 'in the going toward' that salvation can be found. That imaginative leap, which allows us to see beyond ourselves and to reach for another. To be vulnerable, to tend and to love, to rip off the mask that blinds us to the beauty of the human being right in front of us. To recognize the distorting and disfiguring effect of hatred and fear, and the exacting power of love." Keeshea Turner Roberts, Esq. is an Assistant Professor of Law at Widener University Delaware Law School and chapter contributor to the Antiracist Teaching and Learning volume of the Building an Antiracist Law School, Legal Academy, and Legal Profession book series. Professor Turner Roberts wrote the chapter entitled, "Words Matters: The Conflict Between Professional Academic Freedom and the Implementation of DEI Policies in Today’s Law Schools." She examines the usage of language and how it can have negative, long-lasting impact on students, specifically, students of color. The ADI Annual Convening is only 51 days away, and we are getting so excited! This will be a culmination of all of the year's work, including a design thinking workshop, a tour of the Gettysburg battlefield, presentations on the interdisciplinary PODs that have come together through the scaling of the ADI, individualized cohort programming, and rounded off by a timely keynote from Dr. Eddie Glaude, Jr. in collaboration with the Race and Equal Protection of the Laws course at Penn State Dickinson Law. If you want to learn more about any of the three pillars of the ADI (institutional antiracism, systems design and design thinking, or critical pedagogy), you won't want to miss this event! We had a wonderful time on the west coast last week for Dean Danielle Conway's talk on Leadership and Antiracism in Legal Education for the University of the Pacific - McGeorge School of Law Centennial Speaker Series! We were able to connect with our partners in Sacramento and share what the ADI is working on. Additionally, we were so excited to meet with Dean Johanna Kalb at University of San Francisco School of Law, during her first orientation week! We discussed what the ADI's presence will be at the Association of American Law Schools (AALS) annual meeting 2025 in San Francisco - it won't be one to miss! We wish you all luck as the start of the school year begins and hope you can lean on the ADI coalition when you need support.
