We are incredibly proud to share that our teammate, Mitchell Donovan, has recently published in Agricultural Systems, "Quantifying spatial distributions and temporal trends of livestock populations across pastoral agroecosystems at high resolution". This research is pivotal in advancing our understanding of how novel geospatial approaches can help quantify the sustainability and impact of agriculture on greenhouse gas emissions and soil loss from erosion. Mitchell's work highlights how innovative and forward-thinking approaches are essential to drive progress in preserving agroecosystems through sustainable land management while maintaining agricultural productivity and watershed health. The first half of the week was packed with productive and energizing team meetings, where we had the chance to collaborate and drive our projects forward. Then, we shifted gears and enjoyed some much-needed relaxation and bonding up in the beautiful Colorado mountains. "Accurate Quantification of 0–30 cm Soil Organic Carbon in Croplands over the Continental United States Using Machine Learning" marks a significant milestone in our mission to unlock agricultural soils as a powerful climate solution. Key highlights: - Novel approach to digital soil mapping at 0-30 cm depth - Builds on existing literature demonstrating that digital soil mapping can accurately quantify soil properties below the surface - Demonstration of legacy soil sample value in improving predictions - Importance of remote sensing and short-term climate data in SOC estimation This research lays the groundwork for scalable, cost-effective soil carbon measurement - a crucial step towards incentivizing regenerative agriculture and expanding carbon markets.
