The benefits promised by #artificialintelligence are grand, but it's certainly reasonable to believe whether or not the promises are even possible to achieve. Hope for achieving hyper-efficiency through #AI control is high, but trust in the systems that may deliver isn't growing, at least not yet. It's important that #operations leaders in the #datacenter space get to see an AI system in action with constraints set for extra caution. Uptime Institute, as usual, puts together an excellent survey of industry leaders on their sustainability practices and the promises (and fears) around new technologies that could help achieve the goals set - read more in the Executive Summary of the Global Data Center Survey for 2024 (link in the comments)

AI-Enabled Industrial Control Systems
About us
Phaidra deploys artificial intelligence virtual plant operators to assist operations teams in mission critical facilities deliver step function improvements in stability, energy efficiency and sustainability. We create self-learning, intelligent control systems for industrial facilities. Our co-founders and leadership team represent the combination of deep artificial intelligence and machine learning expertise from companies like Google-Deepmind, with the applied knowledge of mission critical cooling and heating systems from organizations like Trane and Johnson Controls. The industrial sector today is filled with static infrastructure. Pharmaceutical production, data centers, district energy and other industrial facilities are frozen in time — they operate in the same way they've operated for years because their control systems are hard-coded, and hard-coded systems cannot change dynamically, leading to performance degradation and a lack of resiliency. Our AI-powered control systems automatically learn, adapt, and get better over time. Our team has already delivered 40% energy savings at Google's data centers, and we're rapidly bringing AI technology to other types of industrial facilities.

Very excited to be part of the Amazon Sustainability Accelerator!
Eleven start-ups will trial their respective technologies with Amazon in Europe after winning funding in this year’s Amazon Sustainability Accelerator. The winning start-ups will get the chance to test their innovations in Amazon operations with a potential investment of up to £2 million. The sustainable innovations will test new ways to recycle electronic waste, innovative packaging methods, ground-breaking building materials, and using AI to improve energy efficiency, and will focus on the UK, Denmark, France, Germany and Spain with Amazon. “This trailblazing programme is a testament to Amazon’s commitment to supporting innovation and driving positive change”, said Amazon’s Sustainability Director, Justine Mahler. “By providing a real-world testing ground for unique and cutting-edge technologies, we’re not only reducing our environmental impact but also creating a blueprint for more sustainable practices across industry.” Launched in 2022, the Amazon Sustainability Accelerator has supported more than 40 start-ups across the UK and Europe, provided more than £1 million in grants and credits, and helped those businesses on average increase sales by 700% and raise over £15 million to date. The 11 winning start-ups comprise: BrainBox AI (Canada) – AI-driven HVAC optimisation, reducing energy costs by up to 25% and carbon emissions by up to 40%. Recognised by TIME as a Top 100 invention in 2020. Cheesecake Energy Ltd (UK) – Sustainable energy storage using compressed air and thermal energy, lasting 2-3 times longer than lithium-ion batteries. Circu Li-ion (Luxembourg/Germany) – Automated disassembly technology for EV battery recycling, reducing waste and reusing Amazon’s EV batteries. Hipli (France) – Reusable packaging for 50,000 Amazon orders, reducing reliance on single-use materials. HT Materials Science (Ireland) – Nanofluid additive improving HVAC efficiency, saving up to 14% on Amazon’s energy use. Phaidra (USA) – AI technology automating HVAC systems for energy efficiency in Amazon’s buildings. Pirta (UK/USA) – Passive cooling paint to reduce energy consumption, planned for deployment at Amazon’s Seville fulfilment centre in 2025. raicoon (Austria) – AI-powered system to boost solar panel performance by up to 15% and reduce operational costs. RE-ZIP I B Corp certified (Denmark) – Supplying 45,000 reusable cardboard boxes for Amazon across five European countries, focusing on reusability and cross-border collection. SolCold (Israel) – Nanotechnology rooftop coating lowering temperatures by 5°C, reducing Amazon’s cooling system use. Unbound Potential (Switzerland) – Membraneless redox flow batteries for enhanced energy storage, enabling off-grid operations with renewable power. #cleanenergy

Phaidra reposted this
Discover the groundbreaking approach of Phaidra, where reinforcement learning meets control systems in mission-critical applications. Jim Gao, a pioneer in the field, was shocked at the AI's ability to creatively do the real-world job it was programmed to do, stating: "We first looked at the decisions the AI suggested and thought 'there's no way this is right, this AI sucks, it learned the wrong thing, but we are here anyway so let's try it', and we did try it — and it worked, we saw the energy [usage] just plummet!" We at Empirix have had the privilege of hosting Jim, witnessing firsthand the revolutionary insights that he and his team at Phaidra are bringing to the mission-critical industry. Dive deeper into this fascinating topic by tuning in to Sequoia Capital's "Training Data" podcast. Check the comments for links to Jim's conversations!
In case you missed it, yesterday Sequoia Capital's Podcast, Training Data, featured our CEO, Jim Gao in a deep discussion about #AI #reinforcementlearning and the story of how Phaidra came to be and what we're deploying now.
