The Habitat Organization

About us

Pheasants Forever is a non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of pheasants, quail and other wildlife through habitat improvements, public awareness, education and land management policies and programs. At the heart of Pheasants Forever is the unique grassroots system of fundraising and project development that allows members to see the direct result of their contributions. Pheasants Forever and its quail division, Quail Forever, empower county and local chapters with the responsibility to determine how 100 percent of their locally raised conservation funds will be spent - the only national conservation organization that operates through this truly grassroots structure. As a result, chapter volunteers are able to see the fruits of their efforts locally, while belonging to a larger national organization with a voice on federal and state conservation policy.

2024 Quail Hunting Forecast By Ryan Sparks, Quail Forever Journal editor This year, we’re hearing promising reports across quail country. Despite some regional challenges, accounts from many states suggest that habitat efforts are paying off and weather has been cooperative. From the lush fields of the Midwest to the rugged deserts of the Southwest, quail populations appear to be holding strong – even bouncing back in some key areas. The 2024 forecast highlights a year where thoughtful conservation practices, paired with favorable weather, have set the stage for what could be an excellent quail season in many parts of the country. After reading and editing each state report, I’m chomping at the bit to get in the field and make some reports of my own. Of course, as always, success is where preparation meets opportunity. Whether you’re eyeing your trusty local spot or planning a cross-country road trip to explore new landscapes, this forecast will give you the insights you need to make the most of the season. So dust off your boots, get the dogs ready, and wade into quail country. There’s a covey out there waiting for you, hidden in the brush, ready to make this year unforgettable. Before you go: Make sure your Quail Forever membership is current or consider increasing your support. If you aren’t a member, join us in our mission to create a landscape that supports wild, sustainable populations of upland birds and other wildlife. No organization does more than Quail Forever for creating upland wildlife habitat, acquiring public lands for public hunting, and driving initiatives for public hunting access to private land. Podcast Ep. 285: MeatEater’s Danielle Prewett on Grasslands, Upland Birds, and Wild Food Host Bob St.Pierre is joined by Quail Forever Journal Editor Ryan Sparks for a visit with Danielle Prewett about her brand new book, “MeatEater’s Wild + Whole, Seasonal Recipes for the Conscious Cook.” Prewett also discusses her love affair with North Dakota, grasslands, and sharp-tailed grouse.     Episode Highlights: * One of Prewett’s signature philosophies is that every meal tells a story. She writes about that philosophy in the new Fall 2024 edition of the Quail Forever Journal and explains how a meal is the final chapter to a story connecting people to birds to habitat. This philosophy also mirror’s Sparks’ vision for the Quail Forever Journal’s new recurring feature, “The Hunter’s Table.”  * Prewett also tells a hilarious story of ice fishing on Devil’s Lake during a brutally cold and windy North Dakota winter’s day.  Listen https://lnkd.in/grY7UgkM

Elkhorn Coffee Company Partners with The Habitat Organization on "Rooooster Roast" Coffee Blend Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever are proud to announce a new corporate partnership with Elkhorn Coffee Company. The Nebraska-based coffee retailer has developed a brand new, “Roooster Roast” blend that will feature the Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever logos. As part of the agreement, $1 from each bag will be donated to the Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever habitat mission. “We’re incredibly excited to partner with Elkhorn Coffee Company on this brand new endeavor,” said Chris Kalis, Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever’s vice president of corporate partnerships. “Whether you’re on a long road trip or just heading to your favorite piece of public land early in the morning, coffee is a key companion of the upland hunter. Through this new partnership, our members and supporters will be able to try a great new blend of coffee, while supporting conservation.” Elkhorn Coffee Company was founded in 2022 by longtime outdoorsman and Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever supporter Collin Kelly. Driven by a deep love for nature and outdoor exploration, Elkhorn Coffee Company set out to create the perfect blend to serve as the ideal companion for all outdoor enthusiasts. With a commitment to quality and craftsmanship, Elkhorn Coffee meticulously sources the finest beans from around the globe, ensuring that each sip delivers a rich and unforgettable experience. "Rooooster Roast" will feature a smooth, medium-bodied blend with a nutty and chocolate undertone and notes of citrus. “Growing up in Nebraska, pheasant and quail hunting has been a strong part of our traditions. Nothing quite beats the feeling of waking up on a crisp fall morning, pouring a hot cup of coffee, loading the truck and heading to the field to catch the sunrise and hope to see those roosters fly,” Kelly said. “This is why we wanted to partner with Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever—introducing the "Rooooster Roast" and "Covey Roast". With every bag purchased, a portion goes back to these great conservation groups that preserve our hunting traditions, enhance habitat and support the birds we love.” "Rooooster Roast" is now available! Click here to purchase https://lnkd.in/gudFvVtb

Amidst busy hunting season planning and trips, make sure you find a way to use your voice this election season By: Suzanne Anglewicz Fall is here! Many of us are already in the throes of hunting season as it takes up considerable amounts of our time, focus, planning and daydreaming. As hunters and outdoor lovers, we are generally spending our time planning every opportunity to be afield rather than hunched over a ballot on November 5, Election Day! However, with the many changes to the voting landscape recently, your chance to make your voice heard is no longer limited to one day. Right now is the perfect time to create your voting plan starting with learning who and what is on your ballot, as well as the voting requirements in your state. With much attention on the 2024 presidential race, it’s imperative to craft a full voting plan from county commissioner to Capitol Hill. There are various political and legislative issues with a critical nexus to hunting, wildlife management and conservation policy that are on the ballot in some form at local, state and federal levels, and you are part of an important voting bloc. Here are a few things to consider when crafting your own voting plan before November 5th. Read the full story at https://lnkd.in/gYQ5xV8e

Delivering on our habitat mission benefits members well beyond the hunting public By Brent Rudolph, Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever's Director of Sustainability Partnerships    Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever’s Build a Wildlife Area® (BAWA) program has been a tremendous success, and it continues to expand and grow. Through our BAWA program, we purchase land from willing sellers, typically convey it to public ownership open to all legal hunting, and work to improve and sustain quality habitat on these acres well after that transition. We’ve permanently protected over 229,000 acres since 1982. With continued growth of the program, at the time I’m writing this we have nearly 60 new strategic projects – and counting – in active development across 15 states. Diverse audiences benefit from this program, and to continue this growth we’re attracting more support from some unexpected places. Our BAWA projects provide quality habitat and preserve our outdoor heritage by increasing hunting opportunities, and they’re also an outstanding sustainability solution. What do I mean by that? The word “sustainability” shows up in a lot of places these days. A quick search on the term will turn up thoughts, commitments, and sustainability definitions from many different business, industry, and academic perspectives. As hunters, we’ve always been focused on sustainability by ensuring we have huntable populations of wildlife not only this year, but sustained in perpetuity for future generations. Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever work to ensure this by building and maintaining quality habitat. As we do that, that habitat also boosts biodiversity (adding more species of plants, insects and wildlife to the landscape), provides climate solutions (sequestering carbon, and making lands and communities more resilient to extreme weather), and promotes water stewardship (storing floodwater, recharging aquifers, and filtering runoff), which are three important aspects of sustainability.
