About us

The Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy was founded in December 1996 by a group of citizens concerned with the deteriorating conditions of Pittsburgh's historic city parks. A non-profit organization, the Parks Conservancy has worked closely with the City of Pittsburgh since 1998 under an official public-private partnership agreement to restore the city's four regional parks: Frick, Highland, Riverview, and Schenley. To date, the Parks Conservancy has raised $108 million toward park improvements. In addition to completing 17 major park improvement projects, stewarding over 1,700 acres, and working with thousands of volunteers annually, the Parks Conservancy has expanded into community and neighborhood parks as time and resources have permitted. The mission of the Parks Conservancy is to improve quality of life for the people of Pittsburgh by restoring the park system to excellence in partnership with government and the community. Projects and programs are conducted with respect for the environment, historic design, and the needs of our diverse region.

  • Tree planting season is in full swing, and our Horticulture and Forestry team is hard at work, with the help of generous volunteers. As part of the restoration efforts taking place at the Agnew Road trailhead in Hays Woods Park, our team and volunteers from Allegheny Conference on Community Development recently planted 40 trees and shrubs, including native species like black walnut, fragrant sumac, and chokecherry. Our staff understood that this would be a challenging planting site, after spending ample time removing trash and a dense invasive plant layer of amur honeysuckle and Siberian elm from the area and digging holes for tree plantings. During the preparation work, they found pieces of coal and slag and conducted soil test results revealing very alkaline soils. Since the site has been heavily impacted by human activity over the past century, the team was careful to choose trees and shrubs that will be hardy enough to withstand the degraded soil conditions, creating a valuable pocket of native biodiversity at the entrance of Hays Woods Park. Thank you to everyone for your continued stewardship!

  • ☮ Our first mini wellness retreat in Frick Park, Naturally Connected, was an unforgettable experience. We witnessed our community bonding in a genuine way, with open hearts, and open minds. Participants collectively healed through forest bathing, mindfulness meditation, creative workshops, and forging connections with nature, self and others. 🕊 Thank you to everyone who came and shared empathy and tea with us, our forest bathing guides on staff, Awaken Pittsburgh, Mana Meals Catering, Moonset and Co., Petra Floyd, Melissa Sokulski, and the generous investment from the Staunton Farm Foundation, who made this day possible.

  • Volunteers from Pipitone did an incredible job of caring for Riverview Park this week! Their work collecting and processing native seeds such as common milkweed and northern sea oats for restoration sites and zinnia for garden beds, planting spring flowering bulbs and native perennials like great blue lobelia, cutleaf coneflower, joe-pye weed and swamp milkweed, and picking up trash, means you have access to beautiful, well-maintained parks all year long. We cherish our park partners and are also thankful for FedEx for their generous contribution of perennials and Pipitone for the bulbs that made this day possible. Go visit Riverview Park and see the beauty for yourself!
