It has been a banner year so far for The Philadelphia Inquirer! The illustrious publication, which celebrated its 195th anniversary in June, recently rolled out a multiplatform brand campaign, including a version with the iconic “I” of its logo made to look like a birthday cake designed by Ashley Huston of DreamWorld Bakes Philadelphia. The campaign won gold for Best Brand Awareness in the 2024 International News Media Association (INMA) Global Media Awards. 🏆 The media company hosted an all-staff party with a delicious custom-made cake at a local beer garden near the Inquirer’s Center City headquarters. In addition, subscribers received personal thank-you notes in the mail from Inquirer staff. Speaking of subscribers, the Inquirer crossed a new threshold in 2024 by reaching 105,000 digital subscriptions and 20 million readers! We sat down with Gillian Gurney, graphic designer at #PNA and MANSI Media to ask how she got her start in the #newsmedia industry. “Growing up I knew I wanted to do something with art. Anything and everything,” Gillian said. “What actually ‘forced’ me into the path of graphic design was that Millersville University of Pennsylvania was the only university close by to offer a bachelor's in design when deciding upon a career choice. I knew it would be a good foundation for a lot of job opportunities: web design, app development, UX/UI, illustration, animation, interaction design, video editing. The list goes on!” “It seemed like the logical choice. Everyone's making businesses, so everyone will need a designer. But creating things was always a part of me and forever will be.” “Animation and storytelling are where my passion lies. Watching tv shows and movies I admired made me think to myself, ‘If someone made this, why can't I?’ So, I got busy and haven't stopped.” “College made me view my dreams as something to take and pursue seriously, and I'm grateful for that. I breathe and bleed my work. Art is my passion. If I am not creating, then I am not alive.” "To believe in yourself, and work your fingers to the bone, to realize your dreams...that's laudable, not laughable." Do you have any advice for someone just starting out in their career? “Who boy there's a lot. Draw as often as you can,” Gillian continued. “It doesn't need to be a Mona Lisa, just draw something, anything, and keep doing it.” “Drawing is muscle memory, so the more you draw things, the better your hand will remember how to draw the things you want. Learn how to draw quickly and in shorthand. This is something I learned and loved to do in college.” “You will be asked to create a lot of different options and wireframes for various projects that are fast and legible. Draw things you love with a 30-second time limit. It's super fun, especially with others. There will be burnout, lots of it. Be prepared but don't give up. After graduating college, I didn't draw for about 6 months, to the point my parents were concerned. Burnout can take many forms, so learn how to recover from it.” “Learn from other artists but do NOT compare yourself to them, this will kill your motivation quickly,” Gillian said. “Please spare yourself from the harsh criticism of yourself. Question why things work. Research. Read design books. Try things! Throw things at the wall and see what sticks. Art is meant to be fun and for ALL ages so have fun making art!” "If you hear a voice within you say, "you cannot paint." then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced." Thank you, Gillian, for sharing your insights with us! Contact Gillian at 717-703-3071 or gilliang@mansimedia.com.
