America's Port®, the nation’s leading seaport and global model for sustainability, security, and social responsibility.
About us
The Port of Los Angeles, America’s Port® and the premier gateway for international commerce, is located in San Pedro Bay, 25 miles south of downtown Los Angeles. This thriving seaport not only sustains its competitive edge with record-setting cargo operations, but is also known for its sustainable philosophy, advanced technology, and cutting-edge facilities. To maintain its position among the world’s premier ports, the Port continuously addresses the modernization and efficiency of its cargo-handling terminals by investing in transportation and infrastructure projects. The Port of Los Angeles encompasses 7,500 acres of land and water along 43 miles of waterfront, and features both passenger and cargo terminals, including automobile, breakbulk, container, dry and liquid bulk, and warehouse facilities that handle billions of dollars worth of cargo each year. When measured by container throughput, the Port has consecutively ranked as the number one port in the nation since the year 2000. With an exceptional credit record, the Port maintains an AA bond rating, the highest rating attainable for self-funded ports. The Port also wields tremendous economic impact, generating employment for more than 3 million Americans nationwide. In California alone, more than 1 million jobs are related to trade though the Port of Los Angeles. In addition to its impressive cargo portfolio, the Port funds and maintains the LA Waterfront, and remains committed to enhancing public access to the waterfront by connecting visitors and local harbor communities with recreational and commercial attractions that expand and diversify the Port’s position as a premier source of economic vitality for the region. With miles of public promenade and walking paths, acres of open space and scenic views, the LA Waterfront blankets more than 400 acres of prime waterfront property and boasts historic Los Angeles Harbor landmarks, such as the welcoming Vincent Thomas Bridge and unique Angels Gate Lighthouse.

Today is National Intern Day! For the past 25 years, the Port of Los Angeles has welcomed local high school interns to gain experience working at the nation’s busiest container port through the EXP summer internship program. This summer, the Port proudly welcomed 17 students from L.A. Harbor-area high schools for a six-week internship program, where they have gained valuable skills working in fields like engineering, business marketing, and community relations. This partnership with EXP has laid the foundation for hundreds of students to learn valuable lessons, not only about the supply chain and maritime industry, but about the workforce as whole, and their own personal workstyles.

Port of Los Angeles officials recently toured America’s largest heavy-duty truck charging depot located in Torrance, just 15 miles from the San Pedro Bay Port Complex. Prologis and A.P. Moller - Maersk have partnered on a commercial EV project capable of charging nearly 100 electric trucks simultaneously. In addition to being the largest heavy-duty charging microgrid in the world, the first-of-its kind project relies on a unique temporary power solution Prologis developed alongside Mainspring Energy to allow the electric trucks to be deployed faster. As California works to meet its ambitious clean transportation goals, this project exemplifies how the private sector, working with public partners, can help make commercial EV fleets a reality.
