CONGRATS - We’re thrilled to share the 205 local newsrooms that are receiving a combined $20 million today from #PressForward! From newsrooms focused on people of color and linguistically diverse communities to others covering vast rural areas where they are the only news source for miles - these local journalists are filling the gaps where traditional coverage has fallen short. We were so thrilled by the extraordinary proposals—more than 900—that we doubled our initial plan and are supporting twice as many local newsrooms as expected. Americans are stepping up to write a new story for local news. 📰 Join us in supporting local newsrooms across the country: Donate to Press Forward's Pooled Fund today, and every dollar up to $5 million will be matched to support local newsrooms across the U.S. Learn more at pressforward.news/grantees.

A national coalition strengthening communities by reinvigorating local news
About us
Press Forward is a historic initiative to strengthen democracy in the United States by revitalizing local news and information. The steady and significant decline in the availability of reliable, fact-based local news across the country is connected to growing threats to democracy, increasing polarization, and the spread of disinformation. At the same time, over a decade of investment in journalism experimentation and transformation have produced new models and solutions that are ready to scale, and a new generation of leaders prepared to reinvent and revitalize the field. It’s time to move from individual grantmaking strategies to a shared vision and coordinated action. Press Forward is a national coalition investing more than $500 million to strengthen local newsrooms, close longstanding gaps in journalism coverage, advance public policy that expands access to local news, and to scale the infrastructure the sector needs to thrive. Strong local newsrooms are essential to free and fair elections.
In today’s The Philadelphia Inquirer, Lenfest Institute CEO and Executive Director Jim Friedlich writes about how a strong and independent press helps ensure free and fair elections. In January 2016, the late cable-television entrepreneur H.F. “Gerry” Lenfest donated The Philadelphia Inquirer to The Lenfest Institute for Journalism, a newly formed public charity. His vision was to ensure The Inquirer — and local journalism as a whole — could remain independent, produce public-service journalism at the local level, and meet the challenges of the digital age. “His fear — and his foresight — was that absent the presence of well-funded independent local journalism and trusted news brands, the internet would be flooded with disinformation and political discourse dominated by the wealthy and the self-interested,” Jim writes. “Mr. Lenfest had in mind days like today.” The Lenfest Institute is proud to have supported local journalists in Philadelphia, in Pennsylvania, and across the country in the lead up to Election Day. We loved gathering local leaders from our 31 Press Forward chapters this week in Cleveland! Together, we’re creating plans to make the case for local news and increase support in communities nationwide. Each chapter acts as a convener and advocate in its community, conducting research to understand what community members want from local news, developing a grantmaking strategy, and attracting new supporters. At this week’s Locals Convening, we hosted workshops on strengthening different aspects of these groups. A big welcome to our newest chapters: Press Forward Arkansas, Charlotte, North Florida, Washington and Northeast Wisconsin. Democracy dies without local news. "Local news – community-centered, fact-based journalism – upholds democracy by building bridges between people, empowering informed and engaged residents, and holding our democratic institutions accountable," Josh Stearns of Democracy Fund in U.S. News & World Report. #PressForward #LocalNews
