The president must step up and take concrete action to safeguard the American economy, degrade the CCP’s economic leverage, and build new global economic power centers that once again reasserts U.S. leadership globally. Many thanks CESI Commissioners Randy Schriver, Dan Blumenthal, Matt Pottinger, Nazak Nikakhtar, Peter Berkowitz, and Sheena Chestnut Greitens for their insights and leadership in the development of this strategy, in addition to the many friends of CESI that supported us along the way. Join us on Monday, 6/10 at 1:00 PM EDT for "Under Pressure: China's Coercive Campaign in the Taiwan Strait." During this in-person event, Project 2049 Institute Chairman Randy Schriver will open with reflections on the latest developments. Senior Director Michael Mazza will then moderate a discussion featuring Dan Blumenthal of the American Enterprise Institute, Ben Lewis of PLA Tracker, and Allison Schwartz of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. RSVP: https://lnkd.in/gkQDpUDB On May 23, 2024, China launched large-scale military drills around Taiwan. The People’s Liberation Army described the exercises, which came days after the inauguration of new Taiwan president Lai Ching-te, as “a strong punishment.” Chinese military activities near Taiwan in recent years have been eye-opening, but Beijing’s coercive approaches have been many and varied. Taipei has grappled with sustained economic, legal, and political warfare. China has sought to sow societal divisions, undermine faith in Taiwan’s democratic institutions, and diplomatically isolate Taiwan—all at a time when the American-led, post-Cold War order is under significant strain. How are China’s coercive approaches towards Taiwan evolving? What does China hope to achieve? How should Taiwan and the United States respond to this coercion?

Last week the China Economic & Strategy Initiative (CESI) conducted its inaugural economic wargame on Capitol Hill. Through a series of simulations, players focused on how the United States, along with its allies in #Europe and the #IndoPacific work together in the economic arena to better compete against #China – both during steady state competition and in a conflict scenario. Policymakers from Capitol Hill, including Chairman John Moolenaar and Ranking Member Raja Krishnamoorthi of the House Select Committee on the CCP, were in attendance, in addition to a fantastic team of experts from the Washington D.C. policy community. The game was led by CESI Chair, Randy Schriver, and Co-Chair, Dan Blumenthal, with participation from CESI and Project 2049 Institute leadership including Nazak Nikakhtar, David Asher, D.Phil., Ian Brzezinski, Rupert Hammond-Chambers, and John Gastright. For any media inquiries, please contact Josh Young. Check out the China Economic & Strategy Initiative website for more.

Join us on Thursday, 5/9 at 11:15AM EDT for "Outcomes of the Biden-Kishida Summit & the Future of the U.S.-Japan Alliance." During this live-streamed webinar, P2049 Chairman Randy Schriver and Director of the Department of State's Office of Japanese Affairs Nicholas J.C. Snyder will reflect on the #BidenKishidaSummit and assess the future of the #USJapanAlliance. Their conversation will be followed by views from a panel of Japanese experts, including Yuko Mukai and Yuki Tatsumi! RSVP: https://lnkd.in/dtXjJGDP. During their April 10 summit, U.S. President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida emphasized the importance of close cooperation amidst a deepening "division of the international society." Biden later described the summit's outcomes as "the most significant upgrade in our alliance since it was first established." What are those outcomes, and how have they materially changed the scope, pace, and nature of future cooperation between the #UnitedStates and #Japan? How might Japan play an even more prominent role in the #IndoPacific region and the world? How might the United States and Japan work more closely with other regional allies and partners, such as the #Philippines, amidst worsening tensions in the South and East China Seas?

Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen welcomed a Project 2049 Institute delegation to Taiwan. "The Project 2049 Institute has long focused on security across the Taiwan Strait and in the Indo-Pacific region,” noted President Tsai. "It has also made valuable suggestions on further strengthening Taiwan-US relations. All of you here have frequently spoken up for Taiwan, at public venues or on social media. For this, I extend my sincerest gratitude." During their meeting, Project 2049 Institute Chairman Randy Schriver thanked President Tsai for her skillful leadership and her investment in Taiwan’s relationship with the United States.
