Future leaders in action🚨 At Propel Andrew Street High School, freshmen taking Civics walked in the shoes of lawmakers in “Pass the Bill,” a hands-on simulation of the legislative process 📜 They tackled real-world policy issues such as internet safety 💻, climate change 🌎, and education reform 📚. This lesson utilized methods from Canadian university Professor Peter Liljedahl's book “Building Thinking Classrooms.” Scholars brainstormed about their bill or proposed amendments and held a vote 🗳️. In line with our Propel-wide Habits, these scholars "owned" their roles as lawmakers ✅, "looked in the mirror" to think about their positions ✅ and "did their part" to collaborate and engage in meaningful discussion ✅. We love it when our classrooms are all a buzz with learning. That's how you #RedefineSchool, Ms. Withers!

Redefine School. Defy Expectations.
About us
Propel Schools, a network of 13 public charter schools in Allegheny County, PA, was founded in 2003. Propel Schools transforms the lives of children through innovative, student-centered learning. Propel's schools are dynamic places where educators, families, scholars, and community partners work together to fulfill each scholar's comprehensive academic and fundamental needs. The academic achievement of our children is the central focus. We encourage excellence by focusing on reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies. Propel sets a standard for creating productive citizens, not just great students, by also prioritizing fundamental life skills. Propel seeks committed, passionate, and driven staff members who, first and foremost, want to make an impact on society. Fifteen years ago, Propel started as a dream. The dream was to build an organization with the capacity to transform public education in Southwestern Pennsylvania so that all children have access to high-performing public schools. Today, that dream is a reality. The first school opened in 2003 with 180 children, occupying a small hospital basement. In the 2017-18 school year, approximately 4,000 K-12 students attend our 13 schools in Homestead, Hazelwood, McKeesport, Montour, Munhall, Turtle Creek, Braddock Hills, Northside, and Pitcairn.

Our Propel teacher residency team is meeting with and interviewing new candidates this week. So, what is the Propel Teacher Residency Program? It's a full-time program where you learn the ropes, get tons of hands-on experience, and figure out how to make a real difference for our scholars. And the best part? When you finish, you're a certified teacher in Pennsylvania, you've got three years of teaching under your belt, and you're debt-free because there's no college tuition! If you think this is the right program for you, visit: https://bit.ly/4bPhhpa to learn more.
