Your Genes Matter: Unlocking the Power of Genetics in the Fight against Breast & Prostate Cancer Common Ground: The Link Between Breast and Prostate Cancer Breast and prostate cancers may seem different, but they share key traits that can impact you and your family. Both diseases affect about 1 in 8 individuals in their respective groups–women for breast cancer and men for prostate cancer. The risk of developing either cancer increases with age, and early detection is crucial for effective treatment results. Yet, perhaps most importantly, did you know that breast and prostate cancer share a significant genetic link? Exploring the Genetic Connection: The Shared Threat of BRCA Gene Mutations The genetic connection between breast cancer and prostate cancer primarily involves mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. (BRCA1 stands for “BReast CAncer susceptibility gene 1;” BRCA2 stands for “BReast CAncer susceptibility gene 2.”) Everyone has BRCA genes as they can play a crucial role in suppressing tumors and fighting cancer. However, some people are born with a mutation in these genes that hinders their ability to repair DNA, increasing the risk of cancer. While BRCA mutations are often associated with breast and ovarian cancers in women, they can also elevate the risk of prostate cancer in men. Studies show that men, with BRCA1, and particularly BRCA2 gene mutations, are prone to more aggressive forms of prostate cancer at a younger age, which comes with an increased risk of recurrence and a lower overall survival rate. Leveraging Family History & Genetic Information to Improve Outcomes There is a significant knowledge gap regarding how genetic variations influence treatment outcomes, both for patients and their families. The genetic link between prostate cancer and breast cancer underscores the importance of understanding our genetic makeup. BRCA mutations in a family can signal a higher risk for both cancers. A family history of breast cancer may indicate an increased risk of prostate cancer in male family members due to shared genetic mutations, and vice versa. Genetic testing for BRCA mutations may help identify individuals at a higher risk, enabling proactive prevention and treatment steps. Early detection of breast and prostate cancer through regular screenings and monitoring can significantly improve treatment outcomes and enhance the quality of life for those at risk. The PROMISE Registry PROMISE is a research initiative for prostate cancer patients and survivors, exploring how genetic variations impact outcomes. By joining, participants can gain insights into their genetic makeup, inform their treatment, and help shape more personalized care for the future. September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Week/Month! This month, let’s shine a light on the importance of early detection in the fight against prostate cancer. Why Early Detection Matters: Prostate cancer often has no symptoms in its early stages. That’s why regular screenings are crucial. We encourage all men to start discussing screening options with their healthcare providers starting at age 40. Early detection can significantly improve outcomes and save lives. Key Statistics: 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. Regular screenings can lead to earlier interventions and better treatment options. Visit our website to find a screening event near you! www.prostateconditions.org Please message us to LIST a screening site in your area! Let’s work together to raise awareness and support men’s health! #ProstateCancerAwarenessMonth #EarlyDetection #HealthScreenings #MensHealth #Support

Special delivery! ✉️ ACS CAN staff and volunteers delivered postcards to U.S. Senate offices on Capitol Hill. Volunteers from all over the country sent in over 700 postcards addressed to their Senators, urging them to co-sponsor the #PSAForHIMAct. Check out the behind-the-scenes of their delivery day! The Prostate-Specific Antigen Screening for High-Risk Insured Men (PSA Screening for HIM) Act would remove barriers to #ProstateCancer screenings for high-risk individuals. This includes Black men and those who have a first-degree relative who has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. Screening for prostate cancer can help detect it at an earlier stage, often before any signs and symptoms appear, and before the disease becomes more advanced and more difficult to treat. This legislation can save lives. Share this video to help spread the message. We need Congress to pass the PSA Screening for HIM Act this year! #CancerAdvocacy #HealthEquity
