According to the U.S. Surgeon General, social isolation is just as detrimental to our health as smoking 15 cigarettes per day. Fortunately, group fitness classes can be a powerful antidote for loneliness. They provide the benefits of both social interaction and exercise, such as reducing anxiety and depression, and you may even make a lifelong friend! Today, we celebrate Indigenous Peoples' Day and recognizes the rich cultures, traditions, and contributions of Indigenous communities, replacing the observance of Columbus Day. Oregon is home to nine federally recognized tribes, including the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs, the Klamath Tribes, and the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians. These nations have been stewards of this land for thousands of years, shaping the landscape we call home today. We invite our community to learn more about the first peoples of Oregon, their history, and their ongoing contributions to our state. Let's celebrate the vibrant heritage of Indigenous communities! https://lnkd.in/gfZP-utf

Does your mood seem to change with the seasons? You may be among the 16 million Americans living with seasonal affective disorder (SAD). The World Mental Health Day raises awareness of mental health issues around the world. One such issue is suicide, which is one of the leading causes of death in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "If you're struggling with thoughts of suicide, I want you to know: Your feelings are valid, but they are not permanent. What you're experiencing right now is a moment in time, not a life sentence," says Providence Health Plan's Paul Giger, MD, MBA.
