In light of #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth, I spent the last week speaking with survivors, their loved ones and friends about what it's like experiencing breast cancer in the workplace - specifically in the communications field. So often people forget with life changing diagnoses the other factors at play, such as securing sufficient leave from your employer and communicating personal medical information with colleagues. It's a tricky process during an already emotional period and one many people aren't aware of or, frankly, don't think of. So many thank yous to Katie Read, Jordan Lubowitz, Nneka Etoniru, Sara Jane Baker and her mother Ellen for trusting me with your personal stories. Breast cancer affects approximately 1 in 8 women year-round, not only in October. It's important to read their stories and understand the challenges they face, not only during treatment, but in the years that follow. As Nneka says, change only happens when people are fully aware of what you've gone through.

Thrivers, survivors and “pinkwashing” dominate October campaigns. What’s missing is education about the disease, those being diagnosed and who should get screened, say women who have had breast cancer. Read the analysis featuring Fly Again Foundation's Charlotte Maumus, M.A., Ogilvy's Jordan Lubowitz, PayPal's Katie Read, Avenue Z's Nneka Etoniru and dna Communications' Sara Jane Baker and her mother, Ellen.
