This summer's heat waves showed how #extremeheat can stress hospitals, due in part to an influx of heat-affected patients compounding with delayed discharge of sensitive patients who can't return home in extreme temperatures. In JAMA Network Open we develop a new metric to look at climate vulnerability through the lens of heat exposure and hospital capacity. Thanks to my New Voices NASEM collaborators for their work on this project!
Extreme heat causes more death in the US than all other natural hazards combined. The 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗽 (with added help from my 𝗦𝗼𝗣𝗛𝗜𝗘 group), within the New Voices NASEM of The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, supported by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, wanted to take another look at vulnerability to heat waves. In this paper, we wanted to investigate how incorporating regional 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆 changes our understanding of 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝘃𝘂𝗹𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 (EHE). 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰, 𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁 (HCEH), combines three indices – summertime extreme heat days, population older than 65 years, and county’s number of hospital beds per capita. The 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘃𝘂𝗹𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆. We are hoping this work can be used to set new policies to mitigate the impact of extreme heat across the US. What's the health risk of abandoned and orphaned oil and gas wells? Through the Methane + Health Initiative, PSE Healthy Energy is leading research to help answer that question. In Pennsylvania, our scientists worked with the Department of Environmental Protection the lead the only study to date examining the chemical composition of gas leaking from abandoned and orphaned wells. The study found volatile organic compounds, including the carcinogen benzene, are often emitted alongside climate-warming #methane. https://lnkd.in/eYwzxj2s

Today, we are proud to announce the launch of the Methane + Health Initiative! Through this initiative, our researchers are studying the connection between methane—a powerful #climate pollutant—and health-damaging air pollutants, such as benzene. Our goal is to advance the scientific foundation for more comprehensive #methane solutions that protect both the climate and public health. Learn more about our work: https://lnkd.in/gdZ-ddDD

🛰️ Satellites, aerial flyovers, and on-the-ground measurements have revealed the staggering scale of #methane emissions. But how can society leverage this emerging data to lower climate-warming emissions and protect public health? Join us at Sept 25 at 3:30pm for the Emerging Methane Solutions Panel at #ClimateWeekNYC for a candid discussion of the opportunities and risks surrounding methane mitigation. Expert panelists from Carbon Mapper, Global Methane Hub, and PSE Healthy Energy will join a conversation moderated by Heatmap News. RSVP required: https://lu.ma/qsob5zj6

Coming soon! PSE Healthy Energy scientists are developing the Methane Risk Map, an interactive map that will allow the public to model the health-damaging air pollutants from methane super emitters. "If there’s a methane leak observed in the middle of the Permian Basin in Texas, or the middle of downtown LA, or the middle of London – we will know what that gas is made out of in these places…" says Seth B.C. Shonkoff, PhD, MPH in BBC News. https://lnkd.in/egS5VNJa

Congratulations Carbon Mapper on the successful launch of the Tanager-1 satellite! Better visibility into #methane super-emitters is essential to protect our #climate and public health. We're excited to continue collaborating on research initiatives that support more effective methane mitigation. https://lnkd.in/dUjpqA-5
