Purpose have just returned from holding vibrant sessions at this year's European Evaluation Society (EES). Anna Baranova and Harpreet Bhullar from Impact Measurement and Learning (IML) team were joined by Mansi Shah from the IKEA Foundation and Rodd Myers from Dala Institute for Environment and Society. The topic? The types of power that movements build and how it can be measured. We also shared and discussed transferable methodologies from Purpose Climate Lab evaluation. The key takeaways we saw from the wider themes of the event: 🌎 There is a need to create evaluation outputs that tell better impact stories; 🌎 Decolonising IML practices, recognising power, and strengthening equity and ethics in evaluation are common priorities for the sector; 🌎 Evaluation practices beyond the theory of change are gaining traction - such as emerging versus expected outcomes, continuous evaluation, and collective sense-making. As the effects of climate change are felt across the globe, helping women take space as climate champions is more vital now than ever before. Purpose is proud to work with Fondation L'Oréal bringing Women Climate Collective to #ClimateWeekNYC.

How do you break out of the echo chamber? And how do you raise awareness of climate change driven heatwaves during an unusually cool summer? Over the summer months, I had the pleasure of working with the awesome teams at Purpose and Wellcome Trust to help raise awareness of heat, health and climate. But this wasn’t any climate and health campaign. This was a campaign that aimed to break out of the echo chamber, drive new media narratives and increase the salience of the health impacts of our heating climate. It seems like a distant memory now amongst all the rain, but during slightly sunnier times we created the ‘Not Just Small Talk’ campaign, which played on the old tropes of Britain’s obsession with the weather. Targeted at 'Loyal Nationals’, this is an audience group that makes up a significant proportion of the British public, but is often left out and disengaged with climate communications. So through over 70 media placements, lived experience stories, carefully chosen influencers and hard-hitting research we brought them into the conversation by bringing home the dangers of extreme heat to our doorsteps. The best part? The reminder of the power of stories and lived experiences to engage even the most skeptical of audiences.
