Rainforest Trust’s 2023 Annual Report is here! The biggest story of the year, for both conservation and Rainforest Trust, was the Brazilian Amazon. The Lula Administration hit the ground running by cutting deforestation in half, we launched an ambitious $40 million strategy to protect 20 million acres during the Lula term, and our donors responded with over $12 million in funding that we granted out to seven new projects. Species–Climate–People. We protect rainforests to save species, store carbon and support local & Indigenous communities.
About us
For more than 35 years, Rainforest Trust has not wavered from its mission of preventing deforestation, preserving critical habitat and safeguarding endangered species. We have projects in rainforests, but we also protect other types of forests and even marine environments! Stopping deforestation does not just save trees. The results include clean water, oxygen production, carbon sequestration and storage, and the slowing of climate change. Saving tropical forests helps mitigate many of the critical issues we are facing today and in the near future. By becoming a part of Rainforest Trust, you become part of the solution. Businesses that leverage their corporate resources enable Rainforest Trust to achieve its mission. We are all in this together, working hard to ensure a future for all species, including our own.

Just home from an incredible Rainforest Trust board meeting at Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique. What an inspiring experience— so honored to work for #rainforesttrust. Rainforest Trust is proud to count Gorongosa among its implementing partners in protecting critical habitat. Led by the great conservationist and visionary, Greg Carr, Gorongosa Restoration Project (GRP) is widely recognized as one of the most successful conservation and wildlife rehabilitation efforts in Africa. The park encompasses a mosaic of habitats and a wealth of biodiversity. In addition to protecting critical land and species, the GRP has proven that when you educate and empower communities, nature benefits. Greg and the GRP have implemented interventions that contribute to the increase of agricultural production, the improvement of nutrition indices, the supply of quality water and basic sanitation of the environment, as well as sexual and reproductive health promotion initiatives. #rainforesttrust #gorongosapark #gorongosarestorationproject #lovewhatyoudo James Deutsch Kim Lundgren Patricia Koval Bernie Tershy

We truly could not do our work supporting gorillas, forests, and local communities without the backing of incredible partners like Rainforest Trust. Receiving multi-year financial commitments means that we can look #Congolese community members in the eye and tell them we are with them for the long term. Thank you for making it all possible, Rainforest Trust! https://lnkd.in/gq25JEEF

So proud and grateful to see our nonprofit’s efforts to protect a conservation corridor in the DR Congo highlighted this way. This blog post was beautifully written by our major project funder and partner Rainforest Trust!

Good news from the remote Usala Forest in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo! In July, Rainforest Trust partner GRACE Gorillas and their team traversed thick, unforgiving terrain and hundreds of rivers and streams in one of the most remote rainforests on Earth. The goal of this particular 14-day round trip was to bring modern technology to a traditional community that is devoted to protecting Critically Endangered Grauer’s Gorillas while sustaining their own livelihoods in the forest. #FPIC (Free, Prior, and Informed Consent) is not just a one-time activity; it is an ongoing process. A massive vote of thanks to Viviana Figueroa, Ramiro Batzin, and Olga Tzec of the International Indigenous Forum on Biodiversity for their continuous support of Rainforest Trust. They have been instrumental in helping us improve our efforts to ensure that all the projects we support adhere to the best approaches to FPIC. We just concluded a two-day workshop with the team to explore the roles and responsibilities of #funders on this crucial issue and look forward to continuing to evolve our processes to support our grantees and the communities they work with.

🌏 For nearly 20 years, the Alliance for Zero Extinction (AZE) has worked to save the planet's most vulnerable species through governmental protected area designations, private protected areas, and Indigenous or community-led conservation stewardship. 🌿🐦 The AZE Initiative Fund, launched in 2022, builds on AZE’s successes through a $10-million, five-year initiative to reduce species extinctions. Funded by Rainforest Trust and matched by $2 million from American Bird Conservancy, this initiative focuses on the protection of AZE sites, which hold the world’s most threatened species. 🦜 AZE invites applications for projects to increase protections or support research at AZE sites worldwide. 🌎 Grants will be awarded to non-profit conservation organizations to: 1️⃣ Establish or expand public or private protected areas at AZE sites. 2️⃣ Conduct research at unprotected or partially protected AZE sites to inform and improve protection approaches. This World Ranger Day, we are highlighting the work of this agents in the Chinko Conservation Area, who work every day to contribute to the protection of ecosystems and sustainable development. To this end, the Law Enforcement Unit organises awareness-raising campaigns in the local communities, where the rangers explain their role and the importance of protecting the environment. Saint-Cyr Mandane, the head of LAB, talks about the latest awareness campaign, organised in June 2024, which reached 11 villages around the protected area. This initiative which reached over 12,680 people, was first organised in 2023 in 13 communities, thanks to the support of our partners. “Raising awareness around a conservation area involves informing and educating local people and visitors about the importance of protecting and conserving the area's environment and biodiversity. This strengthens conservation efforts and ensures the long-term survival of these natural areas. We generally use a variety of channels to reach out to communities: awareness campaigns, educational activities, on-site information panels, films and community events.” Join us in celebrating the women and men who dedicate their lives to protecting nature and communities.
