You might think that the most dangerous part of our job is running *into* the fire, but it's actually after the fire has been put out that we're at the most risk! The CDC recognizes cancer as a leading cause of death among firefighters nationwide. The Raleigh Fire Department acknowledges that cancer is one of the greatest risks to our crews and is doing its part to keep firefighters healthy during their career. Raleigh Fire Chief Herbert Griffin hopes every firefighter takes the cancer risk seriously and that fire departments take action to increase firefighter protection, “I challenge all fire chiefs and fire departments across our nation to create enhanced solutions to help reduce cancer, so all firefighters can have a safe and healthy career.” https://lnkd.in/ePjsUV_j

“Look for the helpers.” When tragedy strikes, it is truly amazing how quickly communities come together to support each other. Lt Pitz, a member of Raleigh Fire’s Urban Search & Rescue Team, deployed with the first group of first responders to WNC before Helene hit. He was deployed for over a week and spent time - as you can see in the picture of him below - really getting to know and work closely with the locals. Lt Pitz’s daughter, Julia, who now lives in Colorado, really wanted to help her home state, especially knowing the extent of the devastation given her dad’s experience. Her employer, ZAP Engineering & Construction Services, Inc. heard about her dad’s mission & wanted to help. The owners of the company agreed to match any employee contributions and donations made. They wanted to help local first responders to assist with recovery efforts. Zap Engineering made a donation to the local fire department in Spruce Pine; the check was personally delivered by another group of Raleigh firefighters who were deployed to continue helping in the area. We know it’ll be a long road to recovery, but knowing that our friends and family - even all the way in Colorado - are here to support us means so much. Thank you to the employees at Zap & to everyone who has donated, time or money, to the recovery effort. #WNCStrong

Congratulations, Chief Ali!
We are happy to announce the addition of Chief Dena Ali to the FRCE team. In her new part time role, Chief Ali will be responsible for managing the FRCE behavioral health and cardiac programs. These are areas that Chief Ali has make significant progress. More about Chief Dena Ali: Dena Ali is a Battalion Chief with the Raleigh (NC) Fire Department where she has worked her way up the ranks. She previously served as a police officer for five years. Ali has a degree from North Carolina State University and an MPA from the University of North Carolina—Pembroke, where her research focused on firefighter suicide. As a graduate student, she was awarded the 2018 MPA student of the year. She has also received several awards throughout her career. One that she is most proud of is the NC Office of State Fire Marshal Honor, Courage, and Valor award that she earned for her steadfast effort to bring awareness to firefighter mental health through her vulnerability. Dena has also served as a subject matter expert at the National Fire Academy where she assisted in curriculum review for their health and wellness curriculum. Dena is the founder and director of North Carolina Peer Support where she helped to develop their statewide curriculum. She is also the author of the soon to be released book "Hope out of Darkness a Guide to First Responder Mental Wellness" which will be published by Fire Engineering.
