Site visit with a view! RAND Project Manager Erick Faican examines the terra cotta parapets 60 floors above Midtown Manhattan at 500 Fifth Avenue, where we are overseeing construction administration for an exterior repair program we designed, which involves replacing and repointing damaged masonry, addressing deteriorated terra cotta elements, repairing precast concrete, and updating the waterproofing system atop decorative building elements. Parapet vs Facade Inspections? While NYC’s Facade Inspection Safety Program (FISP) mandates visual and hands-on inspections of buildings over six stories every five years, the new annual parapet inspection law requires inspections of most buildings’ parapets by December 31 each year. If your building is due for a FISP inspection in a particular year and submits a FISP report, that report can also fulfill the parapet inspection requirement for that year, provided it includes all the necessary details. For the third year in a row, our 11-strong RAND on the Run team hit the beautiful streets of Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, last Saturday for the 10th Annual Bed Stuy 5K. Our team had an incredible experience running alongside the local community to support the Herbert Von King Conservancy. The event is organized by 500 Men Making a Difference, a non-profit that provides mentoring, tutoring, civic engagement, internships, and STEM programs for at-risk youth in the New York Metro area, pairing them with mentors who guide their personal and academic growth through community service and development activities. The August 1 deadline for the initial observation inspection of NYC parking structures has passed, and missing it could now result in a $2,500 penalty, according to the DOB. Cycle 1A garage owners who missed their January 1 inspection deadline are already being fined $1,000 per month and face an additional $5,000 penalty at the end of the year for continued non-compliance. The stakes just got higher for neglecting facade repairs. New York City is suing the owners of The Windermere in Hell’s Kitchen, a 5-building apartment complex hidden behind a sidewalk shed for 15 years, and seeking fines of $1,000 per day per building, along with substantial civil penalties for ongoing safety violations until all unsafe conditions have been rectified.
