Are you a Builder or are you a Destroyer? I just came back from attending the Masters of Scale Summit in #SanFrancisco, and I'm still processing the depth of these quick and fantastic two days. The conversations I had and the insights I gained have left a mark on my perspective, even as I fight through the fog of jet lag. Among the many powerful moments, one session stands out – a raw, honest dialogue hosted by Bob Safian on Rapid Response. It brought together two remarkable individuals: Erin Gore, CEO of World Central Kitchen, providing crucial food relief in Gaza and beyond, and Daniel Lubetzky of OneVoice Movement, who's dedicated to bringing Israelis and Palestinians together to find common ground. In every situation, in every conflict, Daniel said, we have a choice to make. We can either be builders or destroyers. Simple words, but they capture something we have all been struggling to articulate about our current moment. Looking around at our world, where social media algorithms feed our worst instincts and push us toward extremes, where toxic polarization tears at the fabric of our communities, I couldn't help but reflect on how often I've faced this choice myself – sometimes without even realizing it. He shared the 4 C's of a Builder's Mindset: - Curiosity to seek understanding beyond our echo chambers - Compassion to see the humanity in those we disagree with - Creativity to imagine solutions where others see only walls - Courage to stand firm against the tide of absolutist thinking I've been reflecting deeply on this and speaking to all my friends and colleagues about it. We're living in an age where extremists are winning not through the strength of their ideas, but through their ability to manipulate our emotions and hijack our attention. The algorithms that shape our digital lives aren't designed for nuance – they're designed for engagement, often at the cost of our shared humanity. When we embrace absolutist visions, we don't just create conflict – we become participants in the destruction of the very bridges we need to build. The harder path, the builder's path, requires us to resist the pull of easy answers and comfortable certainties. I promised myself to be more intentional about being a builder. The choice is ours to make, every single day. The Episode:
