Donors who click a box to request anonymity often want only to deflect public recognition. They may not realize that their name will be withheld from the charity, says Danielle Vance-McMullen, a DePaul University expert on donor behavior and fundraising. “Some DAF donors are giving anonymously because they are confused.” Drew Lindsay reports: https://bit.ly/3C1GGhm

Polarization is a problem the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia heard a lot about from their donors. People wanted to be able to better connect with their neighbors, even if their views were different. They started book circles, where community members could read a book and talk about difficult issues. They got the idea from the Delaware Community Foundation and ran with it. Bringing together their constituents sparked conversations and brought community members together for genuine connection. “These book circles were an opportunity to extend our reach into those different sectors and groups,” says Sari Raskin, with the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia. “We're not asking you for money. We're not fundraising. We're saying, 'Join us. Join us in conversations.'” For more on the book circles, read the Rasheeda Childress' article. https://bit.ly/3Yr2bkw

The median amount corporations gave to charity from 2021 to 2023 increased just 2 percent after adjusting for inflation, according to a new report by Chief Executives for Corporate Purpose Project, a nonprofit that focuses on social responsibility at corporations. Companies increased their giving to racial-equity and inclusion efforts after the murder of George Floyd, but some have pulled back. There was a 3 percentage-point decrease in such giving from 2022 to 2023 in the CEPC survey data. “When they get reactions saying that they should pull back, firms, especially ones that are consumer-facing, seem to be responding” by doing so, says Dana Brakman Reiser, a professor at Brooklyn Law School and author of the book For-Profit Philanthropy.
