A world where every child is read to every day.
About us
Reach Out and Read is an evidence-based nonprofit organization of medical providers who promote early literacy and school readiness in pediatric exam rooms nationwide by giving new books to children and advice to parents about the importance of reading aloud. Reach Out and Read builds on the unique relationship between parents and medical providers to develop critical early reading skills in children, beginning at 6 months of age. Reach Out and Read serves more than 4 million children and their families annually. Reach Out and Read families read together more often, and their children enter kindergarten better prepared to succeed, with larger vocabularies and stronger language skills. During the preschool years, children served by Reach Out and Read score three to six months ahead of their non-Reach Out and Read peers on vocabulary tests. These early foundational language skills help start children on a path of success when they enter school.

Statistics only tell one part of the story of childhood poverty. Cristi Carman and Dr. Philip Fisher, from the Stanford Center on Early Childhood, join Dipesh Navsaria and the #RORPodcast to share a little more of that story, like how to write the kinds of questions that bring that data to life, so that it better represents the people experiencing hardship. Find this conversation about research into the experiences, challenges, and resiliency of children and families experiencing hardship at https://lnkd.in/eANzHx8H or wherever you listen.

“I am not trying to tell you that Reach Out and Read is the exam room answer to everything, even though I, of course, sort of believe that it is. What I am trying to say is we have all come to understand together so much more about the power of this strategy as we understand the relationships, the environmental stimulation, everything that supports the child’s development so that we see language school readiness and cognitive development.” - Reach Out and Read Medical Director Perri Klass, MD, FAAP

Reach Out and Read is embedded within the existing health care infrastructure — 36,000 clinicians implement our model nationwide. At each well-child visit, birth through age 5, these clinicians share books with children and guidance with parents about the importance of literacy and early relationships. Here, Dr. Ruby Dey discusses how Reach Out and Read works not only with the parents and children she serves, but also within her practice.

Important news coming from the American Academy of Pediatrics today! "The AAP’s new recommendation further validates our work to ensure that every child, regardless of background, has the opportunity to experience the transformative power of books and shared reading," says Reach Out and Read CEO Marty Martinez. "By integrating those into pediatric care, we not only nurture a love of reading, but also establish the foundation for lifelong learning, stronger family connections, and improved health outcomes."
Reading with infants and young children can strengthen their relationships with their parents and caregivers and help support brain development. A new policy from AAP says pediatricians should encourage parents to read with their children from birth. Research shows reading together at young ages can build the foundation for language and cognitive development and help set the stage for school readiness.
