This summer, we created some new merch: a long-sleeve shirt, a notebook, a sticker set, and a keychain. We’d like to take you behind the scenes, share the process that inspired these items, and show how our approach can inspire your own creative journey. “The main idea was to make something that looks good in photos, represents the editor, and promotes Readymag. For me, the most iconic elements of Readymag are the widgets, so we made the notebook with the widgets game, created sticker designs based on widget shapes, and developed the keychain—it’s still in the prototype stage, but it’ll definitely feature the widgets too. Quality control was a big part of the process. My background in working with textile companies made me very aware of small details that needed fixing before production. For example, with the keychain, we tested how the white material would hold up after being used for several days, and we noticed it got dirty quickly, which led us to choose a translucent label instead. Such things are crucial for achieving the best quality, and we always pay attention to these details in design.” —Francisco Pires, marketing designer. “There were several factors we considered when choosing the items. First, we wanted something practical: items people could use every day, rather than something that would just sit on a table. Shipping was another factor—we needed items that weren’t fragile, so we avoided things like candles or glassware. The merch is intended for Readymag employees, ambassadors, partners, and influencers. Whenever possible, we give it out at events: for example, at our community meetups. So if you want to get the merch, come to our events, participate in contests like Websites of the Year—all winners get sent merch—or attend events where we participate, such as design conferences that we take part in.” —Anna Tsalikova, marketing manager. Introducing Caprice Humphries, a digital designer, cultural researcher, and one of the ReadyLaunch grantees. In the interview, Caprice opens up about her way into design activism, touches upon the women in Jamaican dancehall culture she researches, shares her intentions for the She Was Lightnin’ Zine and Archive—the online project carried out under the ReadyLaunch grant. "Somewhere around college, I got into politics which drew me away from art and more into studying International Relations and African American studies. Through these disciplines, I discovered the very real experiences of my people—the people of the African Diaspora. Stories that strayed far away from what we had learned from textbooks in high school about slavery and civil rights. It was a painful awakening that encouraged me to rethink the career I wanted to create. I realized that I could put my love for social activism together with graphic design and storytelling to do something to push people for change. In 2020, during quarantine, I taught myself all the Adobe applications to be fully able to design. I also took on Media Studies. There are many ways the stories about Black, Latinx, and Indigenous people are displayed in popular media, and none of them are accurate. I realized that as a media maker, I had to find creative ways to tell our stories. She Was Lightnin’ is the first live website I put out with Readymag. Before the grant, it existed as a thesis project with a few slideshows that I presented to my professors. After finishing my master’s, I paused the research, unsure if it would go anywhere. Then, a friend sent me a link to the Reel about the ReadyLauch Grant and suggested that I apply. While preparing the She Was Lightnin’ project, I operate out of love, as I believe love can squash all of the hate that we’re experiencing globally right now. The more you understand other groups and cultures, the closer you’ll feel to them and to yourself. Empathy is the most powerful tool for bringing the world together." Wow! Let’s start there. ✨ This week, I had the pleasure of attending the Readymag Design Layers Conference, an inspiring event focused on balancing ethics, creativity, and the business side of design. The conference brought together industry visionaries and creators to share their journeys and explore new paths forward. It was incredible to hear from trailblazers like Verònica Fuerte(Hey Studio), Abb-d Taiyo(Driftime), Yah-Leng Yu(Foreign Policy Design), Samar Maakaroun(Pentagram), and Cat How(How&How). I especially appreciated hearing from more women designers and people of color in the design world, sharing their insights on impactful, purpose-driven projects. 💥 As a serial note-taker ✍ , I wanted to share some key takeaways that stood out to me 🤓 : ↘ Driftime (Abb-d Taiyo) - Purpose-driven work is the new term to live by - We become rich by giving - Impact takes risk—design for people and progress will show - Success comes from 100 failures before finding something new ↘ Pentagram (Samar Maakaroun) - Cognitive dissonance is real; the solution? Play. - Don’t put pressure on yourself to solve the world’s problems—just keep going. - The change is happening around you; things will fall into place ↘ Hey Studio (Verònica Fuerte) - Tangible design lasts, memorable and unique concepts make an impact. - It’s about brands, not trends—design is forever. - Human-centric branding and authenticity create timeless work. - Success and fame are different—what does it mean to be truly successful?
