Insights from Deep Reinforcement Learning Our Match Events dashboard can be used to view the values the deep reinforcement learning (DRL) model assigns to each and every action every player is involved in during a match. The Birmingham City vs Plymouth Argyle match on 26th August 2023 threw up an interesting example of where DRL can be used for "so much more". An analyst at a club pointed out that Plymouth Argyle had dominated the game but lost. If you look at the "Total RAV" value (that is the total Real Action values), you can see that the analyst is right - Plymouth (28.64) were indeed playing much more "valued" football than Birmingham City (17.39). Goals are noisy and infrequent events. Using an xG model is a step in the right direction to stripping out the noise (in just one aspect of the game- shooting), but deep reinforcement learning is a hundred steps towards stripping out the noise (and in every aspect of the game, not just shooting)!
