The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE)’s 2024 Summer Study on Energy Efficiency in Buildings is coming up and Recurve will be there! Don’t miss Brian Gerke’s presentation on Recurve’s work with the California Energy Commission. Recurve used AMI meter data from across the state to measure a baseline saturation of AC and electric heating to inform electrification initiatives. Using data to understand energy consumption patterns is the key to designing and optimizing electrification initiatives that maximize customer benefits and have the greatest positive impact on carbon emissions and the grid. Friday, August 9, 2024 Panel 6, Session 2 10:30 am - 12:00 pm Session Theme: What is the Data Telling Us? Lessons Learned from Data from Utility Programs Presentation Title: Decarbonize This: Measuring the Building Electrification Baseline With a Comprehensive Meter Dataset Register for the ACEEE Summer Study on Energy Efficiency in Buildings here: https://lnkd.in/egagNVnQ

A new study shows that open market demand flexibility delivers results with higher customer and trade ally satisfaction. In addition to delivering significant reductions in peak demand and far higher realization rates than traditional programs, the study found that 98 percent of residential and 92 percent of non-residential participants were satisfied with their experience. A majority would participate in a similar program in the future and would recommend the program to others. Purpose-built for the market access model, Recurve's FLEXmarket platform enables a rapid and scalable approach that can be deployed in many contexts for utilities or state agencies that want measured efficiency and flexibility as a reliable demand-side resource. Last week's unprecedented heat caused New England's grid operator to declare a Level 1 emergency and electricity prices briefly jumped to almost $2,000 per megawatt-hour — ten times the usual day-ahead cost! https://lnkd.in/ezw2enwS To ensure reliability, utilities must proactively embrace new hourly demand flexibility, including energy efficiency, demand response, and other behind-the-meter solutions. This proven strategy can be rolled out quickly and cost-effectively through a performance-based approach. Performance-based markets that pay for hourly savings incentivize innovation and often find peak savings in unexpected places. This was the basis of California's highly successful market access program, created in response to the heat storm that caused rolling blackouts in the summer of 2020. The key is accurate, consistent, and transparent measurement to provide a price signal that allows these solutions to work together as comprehensive virtual power plants. Thanks to RMI and the Flex Coalition for their informative webinar last week on how IRA home energy rebates enable Virtual Power Plants. This was a great conversation about how the Inflation Reduction Act’s Home Efficiency Rebates (HOMES) and Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates (HEAR) can not only save consumers money and make their homes more comfortable, but also enable virtual power plants (VPPs) to help the grid decarbonize while making it more resilient, affordable, and equitable. In case anyone missed it, you can catch the replay here: https://lnkd.in/eFCiSWPP #inflationreductionact #HOMES #energyefficiency #demandflexibility #virtualpowerplants Carmen Best Avery McEvoy, EIT David Hunter Kara Saul Rinaldi Stacey Paradis

Great interview with Jigar Shah on the Catalyst Podcast with Shayle Kann highlighting the simple opportunities for virtual power plans (VPPs) in front of us today: https://lnkd.in/ejyZyVFG Shah makes the important point that while distributed, demand-side VPPs will play a crucial role in the energy transition, to scale they need to become much simpler and more reliable. In the short term, that means focusing on VPPs primarily as "an energy efficiency play" that leverages the unique load-shifting potential of different measures like heat pumps or electric vehicles.  We couldn't agree more with this timely message! Join RMI and the Flex Coalition for a webinar next week on the intersection of VPPs and the IRA’s home energy rebates, June 12th from 2-3 Eastern time. Industry stakeholders and policy experts will discuss how this federal investment in energy efficiency can enhance flexibility and create more resilient and responsive homes for a VPP future.
