Lake Saltonstall is named after Gurdon Saltonstall. He served as governor of the Colony of Connecticut from 1708 to his death in 1724. Originally from Massachusetts, he moved to the New London area and had another house built in Branford next to Furnace Pond. The Saltonstall Mansion stood to the east of the pond for about 200 years. The house burned to the ground in 1909. The photos come from the Branford Historical Society.
