The story of Lake Wintergreen as a water supply started in the 1860s when the Mountain Water Company, and later the Fair Haven Water Company (FHWC), bought the land and constructed the original dam. The New Haven Water Company (NHWC) acquired the FHWC in 1876. This included the reservoirs at the Maltby Lakes and Lake Wintergreen. The NHWC acquired most of the land around the lake for watershed protection in the early 1900s. Lake Wintergreen supplied water to New Haven for about a century, ending in 1978. By 1980, it was abandoned as a public water supply. Five years earlier, the State created West Rock Ridge State Park and included Lake Wintergreen within its boundaries. During the 1980s, the Regional Water Authority sold most of the acreage associated with the Lake Wintergreen system to the State for inclusion in the park. Today, tens of thousands of people use the Lake Wintergreen area each year for outdoor recreation. The photos are from 1954 through 1968.
