The World Stroke Campaign this year will be leveraging the emotional power of sport to raise awareness about stroke, encourage action on stroke prevention and rehabilitation. Sport has a universal appeal that transcends geographical, cultural, and demographic boundaries. People from all walks of life engage with sports in some form. By leveraging sport as a platform for awareness, we believe the message will reach a wide and diverse audience. #WorldStrokeDay #GreaterThan https://nuvi.me/s6wjzu

At age 3, Alex sustained a traumatic brain injury as a result of an automobile accident. Since his accident, he has participated in residential rehabilitation programs to address his cognitive, behavioral, physical, and psycho-social deficits. Through lots of additional therapy, support, and hard work, Alex accomplished his goal of completing his first 5k! Alex is proof that with the right support system and the correct treatment approach we have the ability to grow stronger no matter the obstacles we face along the way. Alex has become an inspiration for many of his peers who have struggled with similar obstacles. His journey was not easy, but his resilience and determination allowed him to inspire others in his community, to shoot for the stars, and face their challenges with courage and hope. During National Disability Employment Awareness Month, or NDEAM, we celebrate the value and talent workers with disabilities add to America’s workplaces and economy. NDEAM takes place annually each October, but its purpose is to confirm our commitment to ensuring disabled workers have access to good jobs, every month of every year. That’s the spirit behind this year’s official theme: “Access to Good Jobs for All.”

Rockland Residential is ready for Halloween! RWW DSP’s Debbie Lemar and Shawna Fogg worked along side clients at the Rockland, Maine Residential Home decorating for Halloween. The plan was put into action when client’s expressed their desire to decorate and have a Halloween Party during their Resident Council Meeting. A shopping trip was held where clients selected all the decorations and with help from Debbie and Shawna, they spent the entire afternoon making it come to life. Great work Debbie and Shawna promoting the LEGACY Quality Standards by having a positive, can-do attitude and seeing the possibilities!

Matt was diagnosed with a frontal meningioma in March 2023. He underwent brain surgery and subsequently experienced a stroke. He experienced right side weakness, visual deficits, and global aphasia. He went to rehab in town and then was referred to RWW for continued therapy. He participated in OT, PT, ST and now is only receiving ST one time a week! He has made incredible progress in his recovery. https://nuvi.me/typfnt

A brain hemorrhage late in pregnancy upended Parisa’s life — and her tenure clock. Thanks to supportive physicians, family and colleagues, she’s restarting her academic career. “After my initial emergency surgery, the doctors diagnosed me with arteriovenous malformations, an abnormal growth of blood vessels in the brain that makes them prone to rupturing. I needed further surgery, but that could happen only after my baby was born. The operation was scheduled for March at Stanford Medical Center in California. But what should have been a relatively low-risk procedure turned out to be much more complicated. I experienced several strokes that left me with deficits in my motor function and speech. The surgeons had to sacrifice a major blood vessel in my brain to save my life. After another 4 weeks in inpatient rehabilitation center, I moved to an intensive outpatient center in Portland, where I had therapy seven hours a day, five days a week. Eventually, this schedule was reduced to three days a week, which I plan to further reduce to a few hours a week in an outpatient setting in Eugene. I made progress every day, I got rid of my wheelchair after two weeks in Portland, and the walker after five. I am still learning to walk ‘normally’, but in April, I completed a 5-kilometre race, running all but one minute of it.” Read Parisa's full recovery journey https://nuvi.me/lz8pxi
