Let us honor and remember Kairos Alive! founder and Coalition member Maria Genné, who recently passed away in Minneapolis, where she was also artistic director of Kairos Alive! “No, dementia is not a living death. For those who are allowed to change, and supported and stimulated, it can mark a radical new beginning.” Read this important piece that implores all of us to start #reimaginingdementia: https://lnkd.in/gjFJxzB6

‘No Country for Old People’ is a documentary about the systemic failure of long-term care systems. In chronicling the impact of this failure on the filmmaker’s mother and other older adults, ‘No Country’ is both a “cautionary tale” and a “call to action” in response to an industry resolutely committed to putting profit over people. We are delighted to support the #HelsinkiManifesto of @AlzheimerEurope which calls on European and national decision-makers to ensure that #dementia is prioritised as a policy issue in the following four areas: Health, Research, Disability and social rights and Support for informal carers. The Coalition looks forward to working with AE on promoting novel and creative approaches to transforming stigma associated with dementia going forward. Support the Manifesto today! The Penang Dementia Association took part in Taking It to the Streets with a community based dementia awareness campaign, “Our Heritage,” that was all about creating an all-inclusive community. About 150 people from all walks of life and generations participated in many activities, including an intergenerational cat walk, traditional folk dances and songs and the making of goodies. It was a fun-filled event for all and we encourage more initiatives like this to take place this year. #RDCTakingItToTheStreets #ShatteringTheSilence #ReimaginingDementia

Our Taking It to the Streets event in Toronto featured “Ikebana Kaido,” an exhibit of Ikebana art created by Kyoto-based elderly persons with dementia, persons with disabilities, children, Ikebana therapists, designers and artists from Japan, New York and Toronto. Like the Coalition, the art and event represented a coming together of people and diverse communities creating something beautiful. Being part of the Coalition and Taking It to the Streets was important for BMF because it was a platform that allowed the world to learn about our creative dementia work in South Africa. Activities included a march led by seniors and people living with dementia from a local nursing home, supported by community organisations and social workers from around Durban. One of our most powerful signs was “We are not witches, we are human beings with human rights.” Zethu Makatini, founder, Bessie Makatini Foundation (BMF), Durban, South Africa #ReimaginingDementia #RDCTakingItToTheStreets #ShatteringtheSilence
