Relman Colfax PLLC is a national civil rights law firm, with a litigation practice focused on combating discrimination and obtaining equity, including in the areas of housing, lending, employment, public accommodations, education, and police accountability. Our practice includes individual and class action lawsuits on behalf of plaintiffs who have experienced discrimination and harassment on the basis of race, national origin, color, religion, sex (including sexual orientation and gender identity), disability, age, familial status, and source of income. The firm also provides legal counsel to progressive financial institutions, Internet-based companies, housing providers, local governments, and nonprofits wishing to be industry leaders on civil rights compliance. We conduct internal investigations and provide counseling regarding consumer protection, privacy, lending, employment, whistleblower, and federal regulatory matters. In recognition of National Recovery Month, we're proud to share an inspiring op-ed by Kathy Ross of Lawrence County Recovery (LCR). Kathy bravely opens up about her journey with Substance Use Disorder (#SUD) and highlights the vital role of community support in recovery efforts. Her narrative sheds light on the growing prejudices and backlash tied to addiction throughout our nation and emphasizes the shared responsibility we all have in reducing stigma. By co-founding LCR, Kathy has committed herself to providing essential community-based recovery services. Despite their life-saving work, Kathy and her team are facing local discrimination. The Relman Colfax team, consisting of Lila Miller, Robert Hunter, and Jazmin Trenco filed a federal civil rights complaint on behalf of LCR. We view this case as an important step toward accountability for municipal leaders, who are often the gatekeepers for much-needed resources like recovery housing. The letter states: Abandoning DEI will have long-term consequences on business success -- ultimately shirking fiduciary responsibility to employees, consumers, and shareholders. Businesses that fail to include women, people of color, people with disabilities, and LGBTQ+ people neglect their financial duty to recruit and retain top talent from across the full talent pool and limit their company’s performance overall. Relman Colfax is pleased to announce that on September 11, the U.S. District Court for the District of Connecticut entered judgment for $2 million in punitive damages and $181,000 in compensatory damages in Gilead Community Services v. Town of Cromwell. The judgment comes just one month after the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit largely affirmed the trial court’s original judgment. We hope this brings closure after a seven-year legal battle to defend the rights of people with mental health disabilities to live in the community. We admire the strength and perseverance of Gilead Community Services, Inc. and commend it for ensuring justice prevails. The judgment preserves one of the largest punitive damages awards ever achieved under the Fair Housing Act and should serve as a reminder to municipalities throughout the country about the costs and harms of discrimination. To commemorate its anniversary and the anniversary of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivering his iconic "I Have a Dream" speech, Emahunn Raheem Ali Campbell, PhD, Esq., a Civil Rights Fellow at Relman Colfax, wrote about the important legacy of this movement and how it can serve as motivation to continue our fight for #equality against our nation’s most recent wave of race-based attacks. The ongoing anti-DEI movement aims to rid our nation of #DEI offices and programs, end anti-bias trainings, and stop funding for the support for diversity, which, if successful, will only result in the racial wealth divides persisting, and people of color continuing to endure systemic discrimination.
