When’s the last time you were deep in thought—maybe playing a challenging game of chess, tackling a tough school assignment, or solving a complex issue at work? Psychology's “law of least effort” suggests that we naturally prefer mental shortcuts and avoid putting in excessive effort. However, recent American Psychological Association research reveals a twist: While deep thinking can be unpleasant, there is great reward when we actively pursue mentally challenging activities.

As part of our Resilience Institute’s Amplified Learning Series, Dr. Anica Camela Mulzac recently encouraged our clinicians to tune in to the topic of couples therapy. “Couples therapy is one of the most prevalent forms of therapeutic service,” she said. “While not every clinician works with couples directly, all of us encounter clients engaged in various relationships. Deepening self-awareness and understanding the dynamic impact of relationships are crucial aspects of this work.” Here’s a sample of content we curated for our clinicians. We all want to feel happy—who doesn’t? But according to the @American Psychological Association, the more we judge our happiness, the more likely we are to feel unhappy. In a study of 1,800 people, researchers found that overthinking happiness levels often causes negativity, disappointment, and lower life satisfaction. “The old adage 'a watched pot never boils' comes to mind, as the time spent analyzing one's degree of happiness seems to chip away at one's experience of that happiness. The invitation here is to lean into the feeling of happiness you're experiencing rather than judging or comparing it," says Resilience Lab’s Dr. Anica Camela Mulzac. How can we escape the happiness trap? 💬 Accept all emotions. Happiness isn’t a 24/7 requirement—and embracing the full emotional spectrum can enhance well-being. 🌐 Be mindful of social media. It’s easy to compare our everyday lives with the highlight reels we see online, which can make us feel like we’re “falling behind” in happiness. 🎯 Focus on the pursuit of happiness as a goal, rather than judging where you are right now. We can remember to embrace all of our emotions—positive or negative—without the pressure to constantly “measure up.” Accepting how we feel in the moment can be a powerful step toward genuine happiness and improved well-being. 📱Does social media scrolling leave you feeling unfulfilled? There’s a study for that! APA researchers found that "digital switching"—constantly skipping ahead or switching between videos—actually increases boredom, diminishes meaning, and reduces satisfaction. So the next time you’re tempted to chase the next video, try switching gears to more fulfilling activities like exercise, a creative hobby, mindfulness meditation, or quality time with loved ones. As children, teenagers, and young adults gear up for their return to the classroom, what might they be feeling? Perhaps excitement, anxiety, concern … or a mix of these and other emotions. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 10% of school-aged kids are diagnosed with anxiety. Here’s how you can support your child’s transition to the new school year: 🗣️ Ask about their feelings, understand root causes, and work together to address concerns.  🛏️ Set consistent bedtimes and limit screens to facilitate healthy sleep routines. 👩🏫 Identify a trusted adult at school—like a teacher, coach, or counselor—they can rely on. ⚠️ Watch for signs of extreme anxiety (like refusing to go to school) or physical manifestations (like headaches or insomnia). While some anxiety is normal, seek professional help if overwhelming feelings start to disrupt daily life. By staying engaged and supportive, you can help your child navigate this transition with confidence and resilience. #BackToSchool #MentalHealthMatters #ResilienceInKids

September is National Suicide Prevention Month 🌹 The National Suicide Prevention Hotline suggests taking these actions if you’re concerned about someone at risk of suicide: 🔹 Reach out with genuine concern. Talking openly can reduce the acute intensity of feelings and bring relief to those who are contemplating suicide. 🔹 Listen without judgment. A supportive conversation can make people feel less isolated and more hopeful, improving their outlook. 🔹 Reduce access to lethal means. Enhance safety and prevent crises by securing firearms, medications, sharp objects, and toxic substances in the home. 🔹 Share vital resources. Assist in creating a network of resources for support and safety to reduce feelings of hopelessness and help them take positive action. 🔹 Stay connected. Regular check-ins provide ongoing support, especially after discharge from hospitals or care services, and are crucial for effective suicide prevention. As coaching and psychotherapy continue to evolve, options for seeking help are expanding. Understanding the differences between these professions can guide you to the right support: 🧗 Coaching Focus: Goal setting to maximize personal and professional potential  Scope: Does not diagnose and address mental health issues Laws: A self-regulated profession—anyone can call themselves a coach Education: None required, but many coaches pursue a master’s degree or professional certification from associations like the ICF Cost: Fees are out-of-pocket, not reimbursable by insurance 🧠 Psychotherapy Focus: Understanding past/current behaviors and setting goals for a healthier life Scope: Mental health diagnosis and treatment Laws: Government-regulated; therapists pass exams and complete other requirements to obtain state-issued licenses Education: Master’s or doctorate in a related field and complete clinical hours Cost: May accept insurance or out-of-pocket payment If a therapist seems like a better fit, we can help: https://lnkd.in/gHUu5cp5 If a coach seems like a better fit, check out the ICF: https://lnkd.in/drGT4xg #ResilienceLab #MentalHealthMatters #TherapyVsCoaching #SelfImprovement

🌟 Our society often values positivity and happiness, stigmatizing other emotions and mental health disorders. This pressure affects everyone, including children, who are forming their early identities. 🎥 Cultural shifts are happening, as seen with the success of Inside Out 2—now the highest-grossing animated movie ever. This film has made a big impact on parents, children, and mental health professionals alike. 🧠 Mental health experts are using Inside Out to create a shared language, making abstract emotions more concrete. Emotions like sadness and anxiety are being recognized as essential, even if they're tough to feel. ❤️ We're grateful for content that validates all emotions. If you're navigating challenging feelings, consider professional psychotherapy—it’s as normal and necessary as an annual physical. #ResilienceLab #MentalHealthMatters #InsideOut2 #AllEmotionsMatter #Psychotherapy
