Today's extreme heat advisory may just be sign to stay indoors for many of us, but for those struggling to survive in shelters or on the street, it can be deadly. When extreme weather hits, please check on anyone you may know who is homeless, or check on any neighbors who might struggle to temperature regulate their home--especially if they are elderly. It can be awkward, it can feel unnecessary, but heat is the deadliest weather every year in the United States.

Respond Now needs your support! 'Welcome Home Kits' is an initiative by Respond Now to help individuals and families transition from homelessness to a stable, cozy home. These kits are filled with essential items that we often take for granted, such as bed linens, towels, kitchen supplies, and toiletries. They serve as a fresh start for those who have faced incredible challenges. By choosing to dine at Crete Culver's on August 21st from 4-9 PM, you're not just treating yourself to a delicious meal, you're also contributing to an amazing cause. A portion of each item you purchase goes directly towards filling these kits with the necessities that make a house a home. Imagine recipients as they unpack their new belongings, knowing that their community cares about their well-being. All you need to do is either mention the attached flyer or show it upon your visit for Respond Now to receive the donation. Please share this with your community and thank you for your support!

The heat is exhaustive and dangerous out there for the last many weeks, and relief is not forecast to come (yet). This is when vulnerable populations--including the elderly, yes, but also anyone living in poverty--are in real danger: heat is the deadliest weather type in America. If you know someone who needs relief or checking in on, please do so. It's what being a community is about. https://lnkd.in/gWuu_RRS

Summer is here! Respond Now's Community Garden is more than a place for local plants and vegetables. It's a place to volunteer, connect with your community, and also a safe space for those struggling with homelessness to know that they won't be harassed during the hot Summer months.

Respond Now was featured in this WBEZ report on the plight of migrants seeking assistance in the Chicago suburbs. "Suburbs are not taking advantage of $20 million Cook County is offering to provide services for migrants being dropped off or making their way to their towns. As of now, only Oak Park and Ford Heights applied for the fund Cook County created last fall. The lack of effort is frustrating some non-profit leaders who see the need in their communities. “Whether or not municipalities have the appetite, the agencies on the ground have the appetite,” said Carl Wolf, executive director of Respond Now, a nonprofit in the south suburbs that runs a food pantry, offers rental assistance and works with the homeless population. “This is very important. We want to see this money in the community so that the families that we serve will not end up on the streets.”'

Cook County has $20 million for the suburbs to help migrants. Most towns aren’t going for it.

Respond Now has been awarded $850,000 from the office of Congresswoman Robin Kelly for additional food pantry renovations. An event was held this past Saturday to commemorate the giving. This money is a huge boost to Respond Now's ongoing efforts to finish renovating our pantry, one that provides 10,000 households a year with the nutrition they need. We are tremendously thankful.
