Välkommen till Cirkulär Fredag med temat: The Right to Repair movement in the EU Veckans tema: Reuse and repair activities directly conserve the value of products and their materials at their highest level for as long as possible, minimising both waste, resource and energy consumption. Reuse and repair strategies figure as the first priority of the EU waste hierarchy and should be duly considered in circular strategies at all levels. The EU has recently introduced a new set of rules to improve citizens' access to repair for a set of products. Join this session lead by Cristina Ganapini from the Right to Repair Europe Coalition to get an overview of the upcoming provisions and timelines and enter the repair conversation to position your company as a frontrunner! Cristina will also present main findings from open repair data stemming from community repair initiatives. Vi ses den 25 oktober kl 10:00-11:00! Varmt välkomna! Let’s dive into how we can make sustainability more than just a trend—starting with what we already own. 💪 ✅ Choosing refurbished products helps keep items in use longer ✅ Refurbished goods are becoming more widely available ✅ We need a more sustainable product system Now, what we’re still wondering is... 🤔Can we make sustainability truly work when it comes to refurbished products? 🤔How do we track who did the repairs and ensure quality? 🤔And how does this market really operate? Hear from Ugo Vallauri Co-director, The Restart Project during our #StartTalking as he breaks down these questions and shows how people can repair their broken electronics and rethink how they consume! Don’t miss it! Click 'attending' 👉 https://lnkd.in/eyYX6M3c 🗓️ Date: 31/10 at 3PM CET

  • 💡 🔧Did you know, in some EU regions, you can get vouchers to #repair your things? However, since they often require public funding, they are have yet to become widespread. 💸What if producers should be required to contribute to this too, through #ExtendedProducerResponsibility (#EPR) fees? In the EU, EPR is already in place, where producers must pay a fee to cover the waste management costs of the products they sell. EPR fees, however, should also be dedicated to fund and promote repair - for example by financing repair bonuses and voucher schemes! This already happens in France, but to make this a reality across the EU some policy changes are necessary. Want to know more?

Tomorrow it's #RepairDay, and it's amazing to see so much happening across the world, from France to the Philippines, from Argentina to New Zealand, from Kenya to the UK and Italy. Today I want to highlight a report we've just released at The Restart Project with partners Repair Cafe Foundation, anstiftung and Fixit Clinic to celebrate over *200,000 repair attempts* of electrical and electronic products logged by groups around the world. 💡 Here are some key insights from the report: ❗ For 96% of all products we see at repair events, there's no #RightToRepair in sight. Yep, you've heard that the EU and some US states approved legislation. Sure, but it covers very, very few product categories. It's essential we change pace if we want to really reduce e-waste. 🔝 The most commonly seen products at repair events are...vacuum cleaners. The EU communicated that they'll be covered by the new Directive on R2R. We fact-checked this, and...it's sadly not true. Not yet true. Negotiations on repairability criteria for these products are still ongoing. Meanwhile: e-waste keeps growing and growing 📈 People like to repair their broken things, and keep them in use for much longer than you think: average age of sewing machines we see at repair events is 26 years, food processors are 13, hair dryers 10...SO parts and support need to be available for *a long time* 💰 Money, money, money: given the millions of devices that people try to repair, we need to incentivise repair of existing products, including with repair funds allowing for the scaling of the benefits of community repair in the repair economy. We also found that expensive spare parts is a key barrier deeming a product end of life. These insights are not rocket science, but the data we share openly is a rare source that legislators and researchers can access freely, as most other sources are either inaccessible or not independent from industry interests. I recommend the full report, here: https://lnkd.in/dVjB3DXR Thanks Anna Negrini for the amazing visuals and layout!

  • 🔔 some policies DO have a global impact. The French Repairability Index is one such amazing example. 🗓 Circa 2019 : A bold and ambitious group in France had somehow managed to get the Repairability Index implemented (https://lnkd.in/dA2vtcGE). The main aim was to help consumers pick products that lasted longer, and were "repairable". Great foresight, and remarkable "assessment" focus too. 🎦 Watch this wonderful webinar which quantifies the impact of this policy : https://lnkd.in/duXFwzk6 Jean-Paul Ventère Ernestas Oldyrevas 📅 Cut to August 2024 : India follows suit, and announces the Repairability Index on all electronics 📱 (https://lnkd.in/dGPefPH7). Great job Nidhi Khare 🔜 What's next? Well. just over a few months ago Belgium announced its own improvised version of the Index, now WITH price of the spare parts💰. This policy will go into effect from 2026. In the meanwhile... 🎯 eager to watch how Norway will offer repair incentives. Circular Economy Campaigner - advocating for more repairable and durable products

(English in the first comment) Ce fut un plaisir de participer au lancement des célébrations nationales de #RepairDay, introduit par une intervention de la Ministre Agnès Pannier-Runacher et organisé par HOP - Halte à l'obsolescence programmée et Make.org. #RepairforEveryone #RighttoRepair

Circular Economy Campaigner - advocating for more repairable and durable products

🎬 Wrapping up an insightful webinar! 🛠 As International #RepairDay is approaching on October 19th, I had the pleasure to moderate a discussion on the current state of #righttorepair in Europe with members, supporters, repairers and refurbishers throughout the network as well as high level representatives from the European Commission. 💬 EU Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders stressed the importance of expanding the list of products covered by the obligation to repair and ensure an effective national implementation. 💬 Ugo Vallauri from the The Restart Project presented findings from the latest Open Repair Alliance report. Only 4% of products seen at community repair events are currently covered by repair rules. This demands urgent action by policymakers. 💬 Thomas Opsomer from iFixit Europe highlighted the policy gaps hindering a universal right to repair in Europe. As long as spare part prices are allowed to be exorbitant and volatile it will be hard for consumers to choose repair and for the reapir economy to take off. 💬 Luisa D. from Germanwatch e.V. stressed the importance of reuse and repair for a resilient EU economy, to protect resources, boost EU circular businesses and create local jobs. We had a constructive discussion with Ada Preziosi (DG JUST) and Wojtek S. (DG ENV), which confirmed the importance of: - Quickly establishing horizontal ecodesign requirements to make more products repairable by design. ➡️ We are counting on the upcoming ESPR Working Plan to include this! - A definition and clear criteria for 'reasonable spare part prices'. ➡️ National authorities, reach out to Right to Repair Europe! Consumer behaviour research shows that consumers are not willing to pay over 30% of the price of a new product for a repair. We should specify this in the national implementation of the R2R Directive! - National repair incentives (funds, vouchers) to make repair truly accessible and mainstream. ➡️ Member States can use Extended Producer responsibility fees to finance these schemes, our discussion paper is available on repair.eu 🙏🏼 Big thanks to all our speakers and to our participants for such a lively and insightful Q&A! I was glad I could attend the Right to Repair Europe webinar hosted by Cristina Ganapini. Yesterday's webinar really touched me, especially when Didier Reynders and Thomas Opsomer from iFixit discussed the positive impact of the right to repair on our rights as consumers. Coincidentally, I've been struggling for 10 days with my Acer Nitro PC, which is in perfect hardware condition. A new SSD has helped a lot, but since the release of Windows 11 it's become increasingly unstable: it would be incompatible; but continues to work perfectly under Windows 10; well functional if I want to do office work. Since AMD's latest driver update for their graphics card, it's no longer recognized by the system. I was planning to keep this computer for at least 10 years, like my previous computers, but now I'm considering buying a new computer just because, software-wise, it's exhausting to spend 3 hours troubleshooting before I can use it. It's frustrating and very annoying to find your hands tied by products you buy, but ultimately have very little ownership over! It's no longer a question of performance, but of deliberate decisions that push us to consume more and more, faster and faster. We could avoid this problem by extending the right to repair to software updates and drivers. Extending the lifespan of our gadgets and reduce our ecological footprint. Why do we continue to adhere to this imposed pattern of consumption? And above all, how can we prevent our devices from ending up prematurely in the garbage can?
