With each new phone requiring up to 13,000 liters of water and millions of units sold annually, it's time to hold tech giants accountable. If big brands want to lead the future, they must break free from the cycle of planned obsolescence and take real responsibility for their environmental footprint. 💡 🔧Did you know, in some EU regions, you can get vouchers to #repair your things? However, since they often require public funding, they are have yet to become widespread. 💸What if producers should be required to contribute to this too, through #ExtendedProducerResponsibility (#EPR) fees? In the EU, EPR is already in place, where producers must pay a fee to cover the waste management costs of the products they sell. EPR fees, however, should also be dedicated to fund and promote repair - for example by financing repair bonuses and voucher schemes! This already happens in France, but to make this a reality across the EU some policy changes are necessary. Want to know more? Avec près de 3 millions de visiteurs sur la plateforme iFixit en #France l'année dernière, la réparation est un sujet qui intéresse de plus en plus de français🇫🇷. Et au moment où le monde a les yeux rivés sur #Paris2024, j'ai pu évoquer les missions d'iFixit Europe avec Mathilde Wessels dans l'émission Focus Entreprise de Focus Group partenaire de BFM Business. Retour sur les actions que nous mettons en place afin de promouvoir la #réparabilité de tous les objets électroniques (et pas que) à travers des centaines de milliers de tutos, de pièces détachées et d'outils pour redonner vie à tous les appareils de notre quotidien : smartphones, ordinateurs, tablettes, consoles et autres. Sans oublier une formidable communauté de plus de 3 millions de membres à travers le monde. 📢 Newly confirmed President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen announces a "New Circular Economy Act" focusing on the market for waste and secondary materials. This is a promising initiative. 👉 However efficient circular strategies must focus on #reuse and #repair of products *before* they become part of waste streams. The previous mandate set the scene in this sense, but much work on secondary legislation and implementation is needed for this to become a reality: #ESPR #Righttorepair #Ecodesign #EPR #WEEE #CriticalRawMaterials 🛠 Our coalition will keep working with the new European institutions to make durable and repairable products a reality across the board in Europe

🛠️ The EU's new Ecodesign Regulation is promising: it creates the possibility to set minimum sustainability requirements for nearly all product groups, including on repairability, durability and premature #obsolescence. ✊But how ambitious and comprehensive these standards will be is still to be determined in secondary legislation.
