I was honored to have been hosted by the British Foreign Secretary - David Lammy and the High Commissioner to Nigeria Richard Montgomery in Lagos, where I shared insights on Nigeria’s promising energy future and how the elements are finally aligning. In my remarks, I touched on our growing partnership with the FCDO, our participation in the development of an Africa-wide battery manufacturing report, and highlighted what’s still needed to strengthen the Nigeria-UK energy/investment partnership. It was also a privilege to anchor an impactful roundtable on Nigeria’s energy future, centered around critical themes of decentralization, renewable energy investment, and supply chain localization. Together with government officials, private investors, and members of the DFI community, we explored how recent reforms and collaborative strategies can reshape Nigeria’s energy landscape. Our discussions underscored the transformative potential of embedded generation and mini-grids to enhance resilience and sustainability. Local content development too remains essential for building a viable industry. Today’s exchange of ideas affirmed that a coherent, growth-oriented electricity supply industry in Nigeria is within reach—if we stay the course. Thank you to everyone who contributed to enriching this discourse. Earlier this week, on the sidelines of #UNGA and #NewYorkClimateWeek, I participated in a high-level workshop organized by the One Planet Sovereign Wealth Funds and ClimateWorks Foundation. The discussion centered on the crucial role of sovereign wealth funds, institutional investors, and governments in catalyzing clean energy partnerships across emerging markets and developing economies. During the session, I highlighted some of NSIA's renewable energy initiatives, including RIPLE and the Construction Finance Facility (which provides early-stage financing for climate projects including renewable energy projects). We also examined the critical imperatives for accelerating renewable energy investments in EMDEs—ranging from blended financing models and mini/off-grid solutions (to improve access in last-mile communities) to the need for strategic policy reforms and alignment of renewable energy investments with national energy transition plans. Always a pleasure to catch up with my OPSWF network family and connect with new people doing great things in the climate and energy transition space. #UNGA79 #NewYorkClimateWeek #OPSWF #EnergyTransition #EMDEs
