🎉 ROS 2 Jazzy Jalisco has been released! 🎉 🚨 Jazzy is a long term support (LTS) #ROS release with a five year support window. If you install Jazzy today you won't need to upgrade your robot again until May 2029! There are lots of great new features in Jazzy including: ✅ Improved Gazebo Sim integration. ✅ A host of command line interface improvements. ✅ Multiple new features for ROSBag, including service call recording. ✅ A host of improvements in RViz2. ✅ A host of other new features like QoS support in Python, improvements to ROS perception, and human readable timestamps in log files. ✅ An early preview of RMW Zenoh support. 💗 We would like to thank everyone who contributed to this release, helped out during our Test and Tutorial Party, or pitched in to do a pull request. It was a rough week. There are rarely good weeks for my industry, but this one felt especially dire. Perhaps because it hit close to home. Not that many publications, however, have been through the scale of what iRobot has been dealing with. After a year and a half of waiting, Amazon dropped its bid to purchase the Roomba-maker, citing mounting regulatory concerns. As a result, iRobot is working through yet another round of layoffs. This one is significant, amounting to 350 people – nearly one-third of the company’s global workforce. Losing your job sucks, full stop. I’ve been through it a couple of times myself. It’s difficult to shake the feeling of shame surrounding the experience. It’s not your fault. That’s a cliché, but it’s a cliché for a reason. A lot of people well above your paygrade made a series of wrong decisions, resulting in a final decision that finds you facing the consequences. There are infinite macro factors in play, as well, but that’s cold comfort when you don’t know where your next paycheck is coming from. The good news is that if you work in robotics, you’re going to be okay. The economy has really been through the ringer over the past several years, but automation has thrived amid the chaos. If you’re based on a hot spot like Boston or Pittsburgh, there are always openings. If you’re elsewhere, the good news is that the pandemic has helped decentralize the work force. If you’re looking for a new gig in robotics, here’s a good place to start. LLMs are so 2023. Feast your eyes on large *multimodal* models (LMMs). Awesome to see Unified-IO 2 released! It's an LMM that can produce images, text, audio and actions for robotics. Models and code are all open source. Unified-IO 2 was trained from scratch with no off-the-shelf LLMs. It was pre-trained on 1 billion image-text pairs, 1 trillion text tokens, 180 million video clips, 130 million interleaved image & text, 3 million 3D assets, and 1 million agent trajectories. Instruction-tuned on 120 datasets covering 220 tasks.
