Reuse of nutrient-rich treated wastewater for a food self-sufficiency in MENA. A project in Jordan, Egypt and Iraq.
About us
Project Title: Reuse of nutrient-rich treated wastewater for a food self-sufficiency in MENA: Addressing health concerns of emerging contaminants of small-scale farmers through agro-ecological tools (SafeAgroMENA) Target Countries: Egypt, Jordan, Iraq Duration: 2022 - 2026 Funded under IHE Delft Water and Development Partnership Programme (DUPC) by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Netherlands and implemented by several partner organisations. Summary: The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region is one of the driest regions in the world where less than 1% of freshwater resources are available for nearly 600 million inhabitants. The increased competition between urban and rural users over the scarce freshwater supplies resulted in highlighting the prominent role of non-conventional water resources. Hence, most MENA region countries are scaling up the reuse of treated wastewater in agriculture while transferring freshwater to priority uses. These multidimensional challenges sparked the interest of the partners' organization to develop this project. Project Objectives: -To analyze how treated wastewater (as water irrigation source) is distributed, accessed, managed, and reused. -To develop socio-economic, and institutional assessments for the target communities. -To design and implement roadmaps through the multi-stakeholder process and integrated participatory approach for greater safe uptake through adopting agro-ecological interventions. -To enrich existing educational programs (MSc, professional program, short courses, training sessions) in target countries with lessons learned and research findings. -To facilitate knowledge exchange and disseminate success stories, lessons learned, and findings with IHE Delft on one hand and across all partnered countries on the other hand.

SafeAgroMENA Monthly Technical Seminars As part of our ongoing efforts at SafeAgroMENA, we are conducting a series of monthly technical seminars to discuss the latest advancements in removing organic micropollutants and promoting safe reuse practices in agriculture. This month, we had the pleasure of hosting Dr. Othman Mashqba from the Royal Scientific Society in Jordan. He shared the inspiring work on nature-based solutions, such as constructed wetlands using local Jordanian materials like zeolite tuff, to treat industrial and domestic wastewater 🌿💧 Their research is promising and has the potential to position constructed wetlands as a viable solution that aligns with Jordanian standards for water reuse. We're excited to see how these innovative approaches can contribute to safer agricultural practices in the region! 👏 #SafeAgroMENA #WaterReuse #SustainableAgriculture #ConstructedWetlands #Jordan #NatureBasedSolutions

As part of the Safe Agro MENA Project, the professional diploma program was introduced to focus on the management of wastewater treatment technologies for reuse. The program is developed under the guidance of IHE Delft Institute for Water Education, and serves as a comprehensive resource for early and mid-career professionals in the sector. The diploma includes a specialized course on treated wastewater reuse, which features practical, hands-on learning through field visits and discussions with key decision-makers. The goal is to advance the careers of our diploma students, who are prepared to become future leaders in this field. As a part of the diploma's program, a visit to Hebel and Qena waste water treatment plants was conducted as part of NilePreneurs Initiative - مبادرة رواد النيل ongoing efforts to provide real-world insights and experiences. This is a big achievement within the SafeAgroMENA project and showcases Egypt's commitment to valorizing every drop and maximizing crop per drop💧🌱 The IHE Delft Water & Development Partnership Program, Financed by the Dutch Ministry Of Foreign Affairs, provided support for this project. #NilePreneurs #nileuniversity

This week IHE Delft Team Presents Innovative Ecotechnology in Jordan 🇯🇴🇳🇱 This week, we are in Jordan, showcasing our groundbreaking work on ecotechnologies for sustainable future. At the forefront of our efforts is the Photogranule technology, which we have developed for treatment of wastewater (domestic and industrial) as well as surface water. This innovative verstaile solution also enables the production of biosolids and biofertilizer, all with minimal energy consumption and zero waste discharge. Ultimately, the Photogranule technology paves the way for the safe reuse of treated wastewater, supporting water-scarce regions in maximizing the potential of their limited water resources. We are excited to have presented this technology yesterday to a wide audience in Jordan, including representatives from local organizations, Ministries, local contractors and consultants, researchers, and academics. The event was graciously hosted by the prestigious Royal Scientific Society and also drew interest from international organizations like WHO, USAID, and CDM. The Photogranule technology is now poised for its second transition - testing in a real operational environment in collaboration with Royal HaskoningDHV and potential applications in Jordan with local partners. As a global leader in water education, research, and capacity development, IHE Delft is committed to advancing sustainable ecotechnologies that can help address the pressing challenges of water scarcity and dynamic climate changes in Global South and beyond. Stay tuned for more updates on our impactful work #IHEDelft #Ecotechnology #Photogranule #WaterTreatment #Sustainability #ClimateChange #Innovation #Jordan
