As we observe National Bullying Prevention Month this October, it’s crucial for us as adult allies to recognize the deep impact of bullying and its link to suicide risk. Samaritans community partner Greater Boston PFLAG prevents suicide every day by educating and empowering adults to stop bullying, harassment, and discrimination of LGBTQ+ families and youth. Here are some tips from their active bystander training with ReThink Citizens. 👇👇 1. Confront the perpetrator. Sometimes stepping in as a third party and showing you’ve witnessed what’s happening can be enough to disrupt the harm occurring. 2. Defend the marginalized person. Respect their agency and follow their lead. Stand behind them in case the situation escalates. You can also check in with the harmed person later: “I saw what just happened. Are you okay? What can I do to support you?” 3. Rally others to help. Speaking up against bullying isn’t just about being brave in the face of danger — it’s about being willing to challenge the crowd. 3. Follow up. If you are not comfortable calling out someone publicly, you can follow up in a one-on-one or small group conversation to bring attention to harmful words or behavior. At the beautiful Worcester Academy this week to connect with high school students and share suicide awareness and prevention resources. The students are receptive and some share their thoughts and concerns regarding this topic. It’s beyond rewarding to have these delicate and vital conversations, and it’s important to continue all of our efforts to bring change to our hurting world. No matter where you are or what you do, talking about mental health, shining a light on suicide awareness, and being honest with our own challenges will help connect us and we can discover that we are not alone! Thrilled to be associated with the Samaritans and to also continue my efforts with NAMI in order to be a voice with and for our youth. ❤️

Yesterday I had the honor of piloting a training we created around mental health and suicide prevention to support front line staff at Keolis Commuter Services with my colleague Steven Karaiskos, PhD. It was a morning filled with incredible work, poignant feedback and deep learning. If you ride the commuter rail, say hello and thank you to the folks who operate the train. Their dedication is unmatched and they take such great pride in their roles. They do more for us commuters than we will ever know. Samaritans, Inc.
