About us

The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank is San Diego County’s leading, local hunger-relief organization. Last year, the Food Bank distributed 44 million pounds of food, and served, on average, 400,000 people per month in San Diego County. The Food Bank recently expanded our efforts in North County with the acquisition of the North County Food Bank. The Food Bank receives food from a variety of sources and through financial contributions that enable us to purchase protein-rich foods, fresh produce, and dry staple foods such as beans, oatmeal, and rice. We also benefit from the generosity of more than 25,000 volunteers annually that help to sort and distribute donated and purchased food products. The Food Bank works to acquire, store, organize, and distribute food through a network of more than 500 nonprofit partner organizations that include food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless and residential shelters, youth programs, senior centers, and low-income daycare centers in communities throughout San Diego County. The Food Bank also distributes food directly to those in need at over 200 distribution sites throughout the county. • Have you heard the news? California has become the first state to ban "sell by" dates on packaged food and move to standardized food labels. 🥫 So, what does this mean for the Food Bank and those we serve? Kayla, our Procurement Manager explains: "Confusion about so-called 'expiration dates' accounts for 8% of all US food waste — or nearly 7 million tons of food wasted every year. While Food Bankers know that food consumed after its labeled date is often good to eat, neighbors utilizing these products can feel like they're being offered food that is spoiled and may hesitate to eat it. Requiring standardized food labels helps consumers know when food is truly past its peak in quality and safety, and ensures all the resources used to water, harvest, process, and transport this food doesn’t go to waste while filling our landfills. I am excited that California is first in line to standardize date labeling to benefit our neighbors and our planet. Next stop — the Federal Food Date Labeling Act!"

  • A big THANK YOU to everyone who joined us for our North County Food Bank Open House! We had a great time welcoming you to our Vista warehouse and unveiling the integration of the North County Food Bank under the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank name and our new logo! When we assumed operations of the North County Food Bank in 2015, it was distributing 500,000 pounds of food. Today, our North County warehouse is distributing on average 7.5 MILLION pounds of food each year! This is a huge accomplishment that would not have been possible without supporters like you! 💚 We'd also like to give a very special THANK YOU to Assemblymember Brian Maienschein, who we named our 20204 Community Champion at the Open House for his leadership in securing badly needed dollars from the State to continue the County's critical Diaper Bank program! Assemblymember Maienschein is a long-time supporter of the Food Bank and his direct intervention with the Legislature and the Governor will make a huge difference in the lives of those we serve through the Diaper Bank! Thank you, Assemblymember Maienschein! #NorthCountySanDiego #FoodBank #OpenHouse
