Creating a more humane world and caring for more than 40,000 animals each year. #InspireCompassion

About us

San Diego Humane Society, an open-admission shelter, is creating a more humane world by inspiring compassion and advancing the welfare of animals and people. Our lifesaving safety net has helped San Diego become one of the largest cities in the U.S. to achieve zero euthanasia of healthy and treatable shelter animals. With campuses in El Cajon, Escondido, Oceanside, Ramona and San Diego, we provide animal services for 13 cities within San Diego County. We not only care for more than 40,000 animals in our communities each year, but also share the expertise we gain through our innovative programs with shelters across the country so they can save more lives in their communities. Although we are committed to serving as a national leader in animal welfare, our top priority is meeting the needs of our San Diego community. We provide exceptional care for all animals through world-class veterinary medicine, shelter and most of all: love. San Diego Humane Society is looking for candidates who support our mission to create a more humane world by inspiring compassion. We thrive on a Culture of Care, offering competitive pay and benefits, and our benefits are designed to help staff to lead healthy, productive and rewarding lives, both at work and at home.

Bentley Has a Day! The San Diego Humane Society recently launched their wonderful Dog Day Out program, where they pair you with a shelter dog and the two of you get to spend an afternoon adventuring together. It gets the dog away from the shelter to relieve confinement stress and turns out to be a feel-good afternoon for participants as well. Recently, Team CSBi closed down for the afternoon to experience this new program.   I had requested an older dog who had been confined for a while, and was paired with Bentley, a scruffy eight-year-old Australian Cattle Dog who had been there for four months. The link below leads you to the story of my day with him. Sharing it for two reasons: to call attention to the great SDHS Dog Day Out program; and to get some visibility for Bentley to hopefully improve his prospects of a forever home. Older shelter dogs are so often overlooked by prospective adopters. Bentley is a loving, intelligent guy so full of love and so deserving of a second chance. Earlier this week, San Diego County’s leading animal welfare organizations joined together to share an important message: Our shelters are in a state of emergency. We have been struggling with record numbers of dogs in care for well over a year. Local shelters and rescue groups caring for rabbits and small pets are at maximum capacity and cannot take in more animals. And now, we are facing the impact of annual kitten season when shelters are flooded with thousands of kittens born to the hundreds of thousands of community cats living in San Diego County. We are moving toward a preventable crisis in San Diego this summer if our community doesn’t act now to adopt shelter pets, foster an animal from a rescue or shelter, and spay or neuter. The situation facing our shelters is already extremely challenging and it will soon become worse. Summer is the busiest time of year for animal shelters in San Diego County, and there are already more animals in care than we have space for. Although we are facing a crisis this summer, it’s one we can avoid! As we prepare for kitten season and the highest intake of stray dogs over the July Fourth holiday, we are asking everyone who shares our passion for animals to come together and help by adopting shelter pets, fostering and supporting spay and neuter efforts for pets as well as community cats. We are steadfast in our commitment to Stay at Zero euthanasia of healthy or treatable shelter pets and keeping San Diego the safest place for animals in the country. We hope you will help us spread this message as we all play our part to be there for animals when they need us most.
