At the 8th Annual Wellness Together Student Mental Wellness Conference, Scholarship Prep took an active role in strengthening our approach to student well-being. Kristen (Rivas) Crowe (Chief Community Officer) led our School Counseling team—Efren Castillo (South Bay), Charity Grieshaber (Oceanside), Alisha Rodriguez (Orange County TK-3), Sean Van Gundy (Orange County 4-8), and Courtney Winters (Oceanside)—as they immersed themselves in sessions tackling trauma-informed practices, post-crisis recovery, and the transformative power of building relationships within the school community. Meanwhile, Andrew Crowe (Deputy Director) and Taylor Ellis (Chief Academic Officer) presented a session on staff wellness, focusing on practical strategies for creating a supportive work environment that directly impacts student achievement and satisfaction. Our Scholars at Scholarship Prep Orange County are on their way toward becoming musical masters with the return of Jazz Empowers—a student favorite (and free) after-school program! From jazz band to group piano and bucket drumming, our 4th through 8th graders are learning beyond the classroom, exploring their talents, and connecting their passions to future scholarship opportunities! This after-school program is the perfect complement to our in-school art electives, a cornerstone of the Scholarship Prep program. Music not only boosts creativity but also builds discipline, teamwork, and confidence—all critical skills for lifelong success. Our annual Hispanic Heritage Month celebration concluded with performances by our talented South Bay TK-8th grade students, honoring the rich contributions of the Latinx community. From TK’s rendition of “Tingalayo” to the After School Dance Club’s performance of “La Vida es un Carnaval,” every grade shined! We also loved seeing our 7th grader's powerful solo of “México Lindo y Querido” by the famous ranchera singer Pedro Fernandez. A special thank you to our devoted staff for guiding and preparing the students and our wonderful families who spent the morning celebrating with us. With interactive lessons on brushing techniques and learning the importance of regular check-ups, our students are ready to keep their smiles shining bright. In this month’s Staff Spotlight, we proudly introduce Melody Stambaugh, Scholarship Prep South Bay’s middle school English Language Arts teacher (and two-time Wilmington Teacher of the Year), who exemplifies what it means to empower students daily. After joining Teach For America, Melody set out with one goal: to help address systemic inequalities in education. Today, as a key part of South Bay’s team as Lead Teacher, her mission has grown to empower her Scholars to take pride in their identities and become lifelong learners. But what makes her stand out is how she’s gone beyond her initial goals to foster a classroom that champions creativity, confidence, and community. Her passion for equity aligns perfectly with our mission, and we’re grateful to have her leading our students. One of Melody’s most memorable moments was helping a student who struggled with public speaking blossom into a confident classroom leader. It’s these transformations that remind us all why we’re here. Melody’s advice? “Prioritize relationships and be open to growth.” Melody is the youngest of seven children and was homeschooled by her incredible mom, who’s deaf—a unique experience that has shaped her as an educator.
