Say hello to another one of our amazing summer interns! ☀️ Welcome Cassidy Olheiser, one of two new planning interns at #SCJSpokane! Cassidy is a rising senior studying urban and regional planning with a minor in economics at Eastern Washington University. Fun fact: Cassidy shares a lot in common with her fellow intern, Christabel Agyei, who we introduced earlier this week—both are studying the same field at the same school and now they’re working together in the same office! Originally from Lynnwood, WA, Cassidy moved to Spokane for school and plans to make it her home after graduation. In her free time, she loves exploring new places, checking out local hikes and coffee shops, and catching Spokane Indians games with her family. Welcome to the team, Cassidy! We’re excited to have you with us and can’t wait to see where this journey takes you! #SummerIntern #Internships #Planning #UrbanAndRegionalPlanning #EasternWashingtonUniversity

We just wrapped up an inspiring experience at the Western Planner Conference in Cheyenne, WY! Swipe through to see the highlights: Our presentation on housing in Butte-Silver Bow, featuring insights from Julia Crain, Rachel Granrath, AICP, and Aren Murcar, AICP from #SCJSpokane, was a standout success! We also enjoyed a fantastic stop in Fort Collins, CO, where the lively downtown atmosphere truly demonstrated what makes a city thrive. It was a great opportunity for our team to connect and create lasting memories. 🏙️✨ #WesternPlannerConference #UrbanPlanning #HousingSolutions #FortCollins #CheyenneAdventures

#CommitteeSpotlight History - Bridging the Columbia Plans for the original Columbia bridge began as early as 1912, with local efforts leading to an initial survey and bond measures totaling $2,000,000. Construction on the bridge began in March 1915 and the structure opened on February 14, 1917, at a final cost of $1.75 million. In 1958, a $14.5 million upgrade created a second, almost identical span and doubled the capacity of the bridge. The new bridge was built with a "humpback" that provides 72 ft (21.9 m) of vertical clearance and minimizes bridge openings. Construction began in summer 1956, and the new, parallel bridge opened to traffic on July 1, 1958. At the time the new bridge was opened, the old one was temporarily closed for rebuilding to give it a matching humpback section. Both bridges were first open concurrently, on January 8, 1960. #Committee Spotlight History - Bridging the Columbia The Columbia River was originally used for extensive trade among villages of the Chinookan native people on both sides of the river and with tribes in Eastern Washington. Native Chinookan had no problem crossing the Columbia in dugout canoes made from a single western red cedar log. At the time of European contact, Native Americans often established rates and managed a business – ferrying Europeans across the Columbia in return for gold, and later, coin which gave them access to European goods. Say hello to Patrick Sinnott, PLA! Like many who chose to live in Colorado, Patrick loves winter and the outdoor sports it brings, especially alpine and Nordic skiing! He earned his undergrad degree from the University of New Hampshire and initially worked in commercial photography before putting down his camera to pursue his passion for landscape architecture. Patrick completed his master’s in landscape architecture from the University of New Mexico and gained diverse experience working in both the private and public sectors. Having recently relocated to Crested Butte, Patrick quickly connected with SCJ; he now joins our #SCJCrestedButte office as a landscape architecture group project manager. With 12 years of experience in landscape architecture, he's sure to bring a wealth of knowledge to our team. When he's not in the office or out skiing, you can usually find Patrick foraging—he enjoys discovering and identifying native plants, especially alpine strawberries, elderberries, and chanterelle mushrooms, and learning about their alternative uses. Welcome, Patrick—we're so excited to have you with us! Interested in working at #SCJAlliance, like Patrick was? We're hiring!
