SEARCH recently conducted a detailed assessment of the 1878-built iron hulled sailing ship 𝘍𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘊𝘭𝘺𝘥𝘦. After years of neglect, the ship has lost its historic integrity and is in the process of being delisted from the National Register of Historic Places. SEARCH Senior Vice President James P. Delgado conducted the original study of the ship for its designation in 1990 and led the reassessment of it three decades later. Lead Architectural Historian Mikel Travisano conducted additional documentation for the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) together with Pete Kelsey. They used large format photography and #LiDAR scanning to record the interior and exterior of this sadly decayed, now inaccessible vessel. #Emesent #Hovermap #Hawaii Emesent

Earlier this month, more than 200 visitors joined SEARCH and a dozen participating organizations in celebrating Virginia archaeology at Arctoberfest. Local staff including Varna Boyd, Sarah Winner, and Patrick Merrigan were on hand to answer questions about terrestrial and maritime archaeology as well as museum work. To help make the day even more memorable, we offered kids (and adults!) the opportunity to dress up as an archaeologist for a photo op in front of an excavation backdrop. Thanks to the Fairfax County Park Authority for hosting this event and inviting us to participate! #Virginia #Archaeology #CulturalResources

🚢 We are thrilled to unveil the remarkable 3D representation of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s ship, the Endurance, which remains beautifully preserved on the seabed of the Wedell Sea. At the heart of this achievement is Pierre Le Gall, who played a pivotal role in the post-processing of the sonar and laser scans that brought the wreck to life in digital form. Known as the “father of the 3D data”, Pierre worked alongside Voyis and our dedicated subsea team, under the leadership of Nicolas VINCENT, to capture the most detailed view ever of this iconic shipwreck. This extraordinary achievement is a testament to the teamwork and perseverance of the Deep Ocean Search (DOS) crew, from our Offshore Manager Jc Caillens, who led the subsea operations, to every engineer who contributed to this mission. A special thank you to our partners Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust, National Geographic, EIVA a/s, Sonardyne International Ltd, Voyis and McGill University’s DECAR team for their invaluable support. #Endurance22 #DeepSeaExploration #3DModel #EnduranceFilm #TeamWork

It has been an honour and a privilege to be a part of the team involved in mapping the incredible #Endurance shipwreck. Our lab is grateful to have partnered with Voyis, where together we developed a navigation algorithm used during the survey of Endurance. A big thanks to the team at Voyis, especially Ryan Wicks and Chris Gilson, for their amazing guidance and support throughout this collaboration. Thank you also to DECAR alumni Thomas Hitchcox for all his hard work during his PhD studies. Additionally, it has been a pleasure to interact with Nico Vincent from Deep Ocean Search Ltd and Donald Lamont from the Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust. Shipwreck 3D reconstruction | Have you seen this 3D model of the Endurance wreck (featured in a new documentary in cinemas)? It’s amazing to see what #subseatechnology can achieve 👏 Great work by Deep Ocean Search Ltd! We are proud of the high-quality subsea sensors of our sister companies Voyis and Sonardyne International Ltd, used in this 3D mapping inspection, along with our own #NaviSuite software for data visualisation. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gNZBDyPH Nico Vincent from Deep Ocean Search, who developed the technology for the scans, along with Voyis Imaging and McGill University, said the digital replica offers a new way to study the ship. ‘It’s absolutely fabulous. The wreck is almost intact like she sank yesterday,’ explaining that the scan could be used by scientists to study the sea life that has colonised the wreck, to analyse the geology of the sea floor, and to discover new artefacts. Want to read more shipwreck 3D modeling cases? https://lnkd.in/g26Rtne3 Interested in technologies for 3D digitisation of visual inspections? Together with Voyis, we’ve written an explainer on the two most common methods for 3D reconstruction from images, #VSLAM and #photogrammetry: https://lnkd.in/gqwrY2CQ Image courtesy of the Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust and National Geographic
