EIES’ Executive Director, Albéric Mongrenier had the pleasure of sharing the main stage at GLOBSEC this weekend with Tomáš Pleskač, Member of the Board of Directors of ČEZ, Lykke Friis, Director of Tænketanken EUROPA, and Glenn Schmidt, Vice President of Government Affairs at BMW Group, moderated by Martin Tengler to discuss Driving Competitiveness through Energy Security. ♻⚡Albéric highlighted need for multidimensional approaches to energy security in a today’s new geopolitical order. These include diversifying supply chains, investing in full-value clean tech manufacturing in Europe, securing sufficient supply of energy through the deployment of local, zero- and low-emission technologies, and safeguarding infrastructure from adversaries who continue to weaponize energy supply chains through economic, cyber, and hybrid warfare tactics.  ✊🗣 Russian-British political activist Vladimir Kara-Murza delivered a moving account of his prison time in a 2 x 3 meter solitary confinement cell in Western Siberia. Kara-Murza’s 25-year prison sentence was passed on the basis of five public speeches, a stark reminder of the Kremlin’s relentless disregard and violation of fundamental human rights and values that unite the West. 🔒 There is no prosperity without security. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen emphasized the need for Europe to be united in support of Ukraine and to not be naïve about China’s support for Russia’s War. Canada's announcement comes shortly after the U.S. announced similar restrictions.   🤝Trade policies like this are most effective when they are coordinated with and supported by U.S. allies and close trading partners.   🏭Alignment between the world's major economies—the U.S., EU, and Canada—sends strong market signals to key industries, including electric vehicle manufacturers.   🔗It also closes potential loopholes and backdoors, ensuring the integrity of our supply chains. The bipartisan Global Strategy for Securing Critical Minerals Act of 2024 is an important step to building an allied supply chain for critical minerals. This bill aims to meaningfully address gaps in existing supply chain policy by retooling our commercial diplomacy and empowering agencies to bridge critical minerals project funding gaps. 🚨 Indonesia, the world's largest nickel producer, is working with Chinese companies to bypass important sourcing provisions and qualify for the EV tax credit, while it continues to push for a free-trade agreement with the US https://lnkd.in/gzRx-s_d ·       Treasury guidance set a hard limit of 25% ownership stake from foreign entities of concern (FEOC—AKA—Chinese and Russian companies) to qualify for IRA incentives. ·       SAFE warned companies could restructure to simply avoid hitting that limit, while still having significant FEOC involvement, commenting: “We are concerned today’s guidance doesn’t go far enough to ensure these credits maximally boost U.S. and allied production, free of influence from FEOCs.” ·       Indonesia is now working with Chinese companies to build nickel smelters, while keeping formal Chinese involvement under the 25% threshold. This doesn’t solve the problem that companies beholden to Beijing will maintain significant control over the production of nickel, which is vital to battery and stainless steel manufacturing. 📢 (Not to say we told you so, but… ) The situation in Indonesia illustrates how the structure of the FEOC limits invites corporate maneuvering, which is why we urged the administration to maintain authority on a case-by-case basis. Chinese-owned smelters in Indonesia undercut domestic producers and allied producers, which operate under very strict environmental and labor regulations (including some companies in Indonesia trying to do the same!)   The solution is certainly not to leave Indonesia to China, but we need to ensure companies do not skirt FEOC and undermine the goal of the IRA: to reindustrialize the United States by building out secure and high standard supply chains for the critical minerals and materials that underpin our modern economic and national security.
