SELF is thrilled to announce the launch of our search for a pivotal new leadership role: Director of Operations. This is the first position created under Shannon Garfield's leadership, and we’re at an exciting phase in our organization to achieve even greater impact. The Director of Operations will report to our Chief of Staff and Strategy, Avni P. Murray, and play a critical role in ensuring that our organizational systems—spanning project management, data, knowledge management, and internal operations—are streamlined, thoughtful, and efficient. Before posting this role, we carefully considered what it takes to thrive at SELF. Alongside the job description, here are a few key things we believe are important for this role: ✅ You understand that the essential “behind the scenes” work in operations is just as important as our programming, and you can find the connection between this work and advancing the mission. ✅ Colleagues describe you as a collaborative team player who supports the organization’s broader goals in any way you can. ✅ You have the unique ability to see the big picture for building and improving systems, while also excelling in the details of data and project planning. ✅ Building strong relationships, even in a remote environment is important to you, and you genuinely care about your teammates. You respect and honor people for their unique identities and are committed to growing in your understanding of diverse perspectives. ✅ Working for a small, lean organization excites you. You enjoy getting involved in multiple aspects of how we operate and thrive in doing more with less. If this resonates with you, we’d love to hear from you! See below. The application deadline for the role is Sunday, November 3rd. Please apply or spread the word widely by sharing!

Approximately 7.5 million students with disabilities are eligible to receive special education. But more than half of all public schools in the nation are missing the teachers they need to serve them. The severe shortage of teachers makes it difficult for schools to meaningfully deliver the legally-mandated services students with disabilities need and deserve. EdResearch for Action’s new brief examines the reasons behind the special education staffing crisis and proven solutions that state and district leaders can use to ensure students with disabilities receive effective educational support. In the brief, the researchers offer practical short- and long-term strategies for addressing staffing shortages, including: ☑ Offering financial incentives to teachers certified in special education to move into those roles. ☑ Providing special education teachers with more planning time and professional development opportunities, smaller caseloads, and better access to resources. ☑ Training paraeducators to deliver highly structured, evidence-based interventions to students with disabilities. ☑ Partnering with local teacher preparation programs to align student teaching experiences with district needs. Read the brief here: https://lnkd.in/dBvPEG-D ******* BACKGROUND EdResearch for Action – a joint initiative of Results for America and the Annenberg Institute at Brown University brings together education leaders, policymakers, and researchers to partner on effective, evidence-based strategies for improving schools. EdResearch for Action briefs summarize the evidence base on key topics and provide K-12 education decision-makers and advocates with practical, operational guidance for using that evidence to achieve positive outcomes for students. I'm fortunate to be a part of the Program Advisory Board at Annenberg Institute at Brown University and proud to lead the work to support schools with solutions at SELF - Special Education Leader Fellowship!

In our most recent publication, "Shifting the Tide: Exploring Centralization of Services for Students with Disabilities in New Orleans," a large majority of New Orleans school stakeholders (73%) agreed that centralizing aspects of special education would improve their ability to meet the needs of students with disabilities. Given the well-documented challenges, centralization presents an opportunity to impact students and address systemic inequities directly. Around 7.3 million disabled students are enrolled in public K-12 schools in the country. Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), students with disabilities are guaranteed the right to free public education with appropriate special education services. However, special education programs are understaffed and underfunded, and students of color with disabilities are disproportionately impacted by the lack of resources. Join our Chief of Program Quality + Implementation, Dr. A'Seret Dokubo, with The Hunt Institute on 7/25 for a conversation focused on the extra barriers students of color with disabilities face and sustainable solutions to eliminate gaps in services for all students with disabilities. “Racism and ableism are often thought of as parallel systems of oppression that work separately to perpetuate social hierarchy. Not only does this way of looking at the world ignore the experiences of people of color with disabilities, but it also fails to examine how race is pathologized in order to create racism." - Isabella Kres-Nash This #Juneteenth take opportunity to learn about the intersection between #racism and #ableism #DisabilityInclusion #Juneteenth2024 #InclusionRevolution https://lnkd.in/gDy7-amz

I’m thrilled to announce my selection to the EdResearch Advisory Board, a joint initiative between EdResearch for Action with Annenberg Foundation at Brown University and Transcend to elevate educator voices in shaping research insights for real-world impact! As educators, we understand the pivotal role we play every day in shaping education. That's why I'm honored to embark on this year-long journey alongside fellow school and district leaders, as we collaborate directly with the EdResearch team and leading education researchers to ensure the usefulness and relevance of their research synthesis briefs. These briefs are designed to provide evidence-based guidance for K-12 decision makers and advocates so that we can meet the diverse needs of our students. I'm delighted to be part of this participatory approach that empowers educators to influence and refine meaning-making of research - and also bring learnings back to our partners at SELF - Special Education Leader Fellowship. Having just finished facilitating a session with our INCREDIBLE District Leader Fellows in Los Angeles, I’m sitting in SO MUCH gratitude. ❤️ The leaders in the space are powerful beyond measure - they are leading their CMOs with such a force - as they drive change for EVERY SINGLE LEARNER. I’m so thankful to learn from the brilliance, vulnerability, skill, strength, love, and boldness of the individuals and the collective community. THANK YOU for the trust, engagement, and fierceness - today and all days. ❤️ As Mia Mingus, writer, activist, and educator for transformative justice said: “Interdependence is both ‘you and I’ and ‘we.’ It is solidarity, in the best sense of the word. It is inscribing community on our skin over and over and over again. Because the truth is: we need each other. We need each other. And every time we turn away from each other, we turn away from ourselves.” New Los Angeles Charter Schools, Alliance College-Ready Public Schools, ICEF Public Schools, Aspire Public Schools, Gabriella Charter Schools, Extera Public Schools, The Accelerated Schools, Westside Innovative School House (WISH) Charter School, Libertas College Prep, Pacific Palisades Charter High School, ISANA Academies, Birmingham Community Charter High School, SELF - Special Education Leader Fellowship

SELF is finalizing our next cohort of Leader Fellows! With support from Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, SELF’s Leadership program was evaluated by McREL International. Researchers found that SELF positively impacts participant retention in schools, particularly for educators of color. The study also found that SELF programming serves as a ripple effect, empowering special education teachers with the confidence and skills they need to stay and thrive in their positions.
