An example of how convolutional neural networks (CNNs) detect image features and objects. This is also similar to how a matched filter in wireless communication works The yellow patch represents a 5x5 image filter that outputs a high value when it's overlayed over a region that is similar to digit "1" and outputs a low value otherwise [-1, 2, 2, -1, -1], [-1, -1, 2, -1, -1], [-1, -1, 2, -1, -1], [-1, -1, 2, -1, -1], [-1, 2, 2, 2, -1] A threshold is applied to the result to pass only the high values which represent the locations of the ones CNN works by learning numerous such filters and then applying them to the image to extract features and make decisions.
