    Life can take you places if you’re up for the journey. Eight years ago, while still in business school, I had the chance to visit the Parcel Forum show in Dallas. Since I was a broke student, the conference organizers were kind enough to offer me a free ticket. I was grateful. Little did I know, that conference would change my life. The parcel delivery industry in 2016 was as far as it gets from ‘innovative’. While the whole world was talking about autonomous vehicles, drones and customer experience, the hottest topic at Parcel Forum still revolved around how to negotiate better rates with UPS and FedEx. The industry was so outdated that I found it mind-blowing. It immediately became clear to me that someone was going to disrupt parcel delivery. And rather than wait for it to happen, I decided to start Veho to do it ourselves. But a lot has changed since 2016. Recently, Veho and I came full circle with Parcel Forum. At the 2024 show in Dallas, I had the opportunity to give a live talk about how Veho is closing the gap in the market between what consumers want and what brands can offer. We're doing that by leveraging disruptive technology, a scalable operating model, and world-class customer experience. But we also shared a few other useful insights for retailers and brands. First, we shared a step-by-step playbook for how brands can better leverage their shipping providers to drive their overall business strategy. And second, we presented a new way for brands to measure the overall ROI on their shipping spend, so they can make smarter decisions about who to partner with. We call it Return on Shipping (ROS).     Before Itamar Zur co-founded Veho, he was a student at Harvard Business School. As a student, he had the chance to attend PARCEL Forum (The #1 Package Fulfillment Event in the U.S.). He jumped on the opportunity. At the conference, it immediately became clear to him that someone was going to disrupt parcel delivery. And rather than wait for it to happen, he decided to start Veho. Consumers want ever-faster delivery (3-5 days this year vs 5-7 last year); easy returns without having to print a label; complete visibility into the entire delivery process; the ability to control when, where and how a package arrives at their door; the ability to provide instructions and communicate directly with the delivery driver; and the ability to chat and troubleshoot in real time with customer service—and they want it for free.     We’ve seen this again and again. Big industries aren’t transformed by incumbents, but by fast moving disruptors using innovative technology. The entertainment industry was once led by MGM and Warner Brothers; today, it’s led by Amazon and Netflix. The mobile communication industry was once led by AT&T; today, it’s led by Apple. Now, the same exact disruption is happening in logistics. UPS and FedEx have created a shipping industry that works well for *them*. They are slow to innovate, squeeze everyone on rates, and are not incentivized to make it work better for everyone else. But technology is empowering consumers and retailers to expect more. Consumers expect the products they buy to arrive fast, on-time, and want to control the delivery experience: 90% of consumers will repurchase after a good delivery experience. 65% won’t after a bad one. Retailers want more value for their customers. Better delivery drives a 51% increase in customer lifetime value. UPS and FedEx can’t unlock it. Veho does it every day. As Harvard Business School’s Clayton Christensen observed in The Innovator’s Dilemma: "Time after time, the leaders of industries dominated by one technology were toppled by newcomers… [The incumbents] made incremental improvements to sustain their market dominance, but it was the newcomers who embraced disruptive innovations and changed the game.” Excited to share my latest Forbes article.
