About us

The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) was founded in Los Angeles, California, in 1974 by a group of engineers employed by the city of Los Angeles. Their objective was to form a national organization of professional engineers to serve as role models in the Hispanic community. The concept of networking was the key basis for the organization. SHPE quickly established two student chapters to begin the network that would grow to encompass the nation as well as reach countries outside the United States. Today, SHPE sustains a strong network of professional and student chapters throughout the nation. MISSION: SHPE changes lives by empowering the Hispanic community to realize its fullest potential and to impact the world through STEM awareness, access, support and development. Vision VISION: SHPE's vision is a world where Hispanics are highly valued and influential as the leading innovators, scientists, mathematicians, and engineers. CAREERS: SHPE's Career Center is the leading online career center, the career hub for Hispanic STEM professionals, serving more than 36,000 members. It’s where candidates go to find the right science, technology, engineering and math jobs and where employers go to find highly-qualified STEM talent. It is one of my core beliefs that engineers have the power and duty to make changes that shape our world into a better place. I’m excited to announce that I’ll be joining a panel alongside my friends and mentors Krystal Peña and Alex Luna at Valparaiso University discussing our engineering journeys and what we are doing to be "Pioneers of Change." This panel is aimed at current undergrads and local high school students, and will be livestreamed here: https://lnkd.in/gUv5e_cM Please share with anyone you think may be interested! I’m looking forward to engaging with future engineers, exchanging ideas, and hopefully inspiring the next generation to push boundaries and lead with passion. A special thank you to Doug Tougaw for the invitation to speak!

Engineering Student at University of Cincinnati

On April 17th, 2024, I was selected as 1 out of 560+ applicants to represent SHPE on Capitol Hill. This tremendous honor of lifting up the voices of the 19,700+ members and all current and future Hispanics in STEM was an experience I will cherish for the rest of my life. God has truly blessed me and opened doors never even thought possible as a Columbus City Schools - Ohio graduate. If you're from CCS, you can accomplish anything! I would like to thank Mariana Acuña, Rebecca Pebley-Starkey and the rest of the SHPE staff for having the vision and executing such a successful event. I would also like to thank my friends at the SHPE University of Cincinnati Chapter for all their hard work at the local level and making this opportunity a reality for me. I am grateful to have been in Group M with Elany Saavedra, Daniel Luna and Nicolas Valencia Diaz representing the Midwest and SHPE Region 6. Our objective was to share facts regarding the current state of Hispanics in STEM and our testimonies of how SHPE transformed our lives to the representatives from Wisconsin, Minnesota, Missouri and the great state of Ohio. Three major takeaways were: 1. Get involved in your local, state and federal government. So many issues you care about that affect your everyday life can be addressed before it reaches the federal level. A saying that I learned from Daniel Luna during the trip was “Pide por tu boca”. It means to ask with your mouth. Speak up and let others help you decide if your idea is not feasible, not speaking up means you are the one stopping yourself not others. Go out and let your voice be heard. 2. Hispanics, technology and the future of United States go hand and hand and hand.     Hispanics are the fastest growing group in the United States and more than capable to satiate the 10,000,000+ jobs in STEM that are going to be created by 2030. This increase is due to AI, micro-chip manufacturing, renewable energy and many other technologies set to modernize the United States and the world. Furthermore, knowing Spanish or any other language in today’s global society is in high demand as it allows more opportunities for companies to build connections and create revenue outside of their own country. 3. Whenever an opportunity arises, say YES. Never would I have expected to end up going to Capitol Hill while studying to get an undergraduate degree in Environmental Engineering. Getting this opportunity started in 2020 when I said YES to joining SHPE. Three years of gained experience prepared me to say YES to presidency in 2023 which help me land the internship I currently am in at Idaho National Laboratory. All that I mentioned just now is what I said in my interview during the selection process to go to Capitol Hill. Look at the opportunities where you can grow in the organizations you are part of. The future is bright for Hispanics and technology in the United States. All we have to do is rise up and say YES when the opportunity arises.
